Yes, I know, I own a Seiko SKX which is one of the holy grail sub-$500 automatics, and I think it's a must-have for any true enthusiast. It was $240 and I wear it most out of everything actually and have it on as we speak.

But there's something about wearing such a classic and iconic time piece as a Rollie, Breitling, or Patek that just changes the way you carry yourself.

I used to think similarly until I bought my first Rolex. Now I'm dying to get another. It becomes an addiction.

It's also inspiration to keep closing more and more deals at work. ;)

My daily, 5.11 Sureshot Ballistic Computer watch. Its kind of a POS (watch body breaks where the band bolts to it) but they have fixed it under warranty. It mostly just looks good and the ballistic computer works pretty well haha

Or you could just not wear a watch.

I'm not saying raid the jewelry case at Kohl's or climb the watch wall at Fossil. For me, I'd rather have several <$1K watches that I enjoy than one or two mega buck watches that I have to wear over and over. A watch doesn't have to cost thousands to be an enjoyable AND quality piece.

If you can wade through all the gaudy stuff, you might find something you like from Invicta. They use some of the same movements as some of the big boys like Tag Heuer and such.

I can't bring myself to own an Invicta

I always wanted a simple rolex, like the datejust 16234 with the oyster band. My wife laughed at me spending a little money on a watch, so I threw $20k into my mustang. I still want the watch

No. I just own high end watches. When you have owned Panerai, Bell & Ross, Tag, Oris, U Boat and Breitling an Invicta, of any level isn't even on my radar.

Like I said, watch snobs. LOL Invicta uses some of the same quartz movements as some of those companies; Tag for sure. So it's not like you're getting a more accurate (or better built) watch from the higher end companies. Look up the high end companies that use ETA or RONDA movements. You're going to be surprised.

But... I get it.

I have a watch... I paid $15 for it. Its just white.. legit nothing special. Its made of rubber and is an awesome watch to wear out in the field at work because I can just wipe it right off.

Worn it probably 60 times in the 2 years I've had it. Still runs perfect.

I have the Indicta I spoke of earlier. Battery died within 3 weeks, wore it twice, the snap on the right side of the watch that protects the knob... broken. Strap.. coming apart.

I wouldnt exactly say Invicta is anywhere near on the list of anything high end or " better built"

Once again, I have to disagree. Most "watch snobs" don't buy Quartz movement watches. I only own one Quartz watch - my Seiko SSC Chronograph - everything else is automatic. The only other Quartz watch I'd buy is a Shinola, and it's only because I'm upset they don't make an automatic.

One of the reasons I bought my Rolex was because of the 3135 movement. It's between about -1/+1 on average, and it's also the craftsmanship that goes into those watches. It genuinely feels different. Even my Tissot, which was by no means cheap, feels cheaper than the Submariner.

Citizen, Seiko, and Bulova have created some of the most accurate movements in the world, but there's something about a fine tuned automatic movement that's just pure sexiness to watch. And there's something about the craftsmanship and QC that goes into luxury watches that you'll never find with and Invicta.

Very good write up. I have a Rolex with perpetual movement (automatic). As a former jeweler, I'm not big on jeweler in general as I have been "desensitized" meaning gold is a "metal" and diamonds are a "stone" to me. Although my wife would challenge me on that thought.

One jewelry item I do buy and am fascinated with are watches. Citizen, Seiko and Bulova were the big dogs back in the day and still are today. Longines is another watch I own which is quartz movement.

Let me guess. It was one of their $40 I-Force Wal-Mart specials with a silicone band? What did you expect? And a dead battery signifies nothing. My car battery died in less than 4 years. Does that make the whole car a piece of crap? Who knows how long that watch had been sitting in inventory. Stores don't go around changing batteries in watches.

Long-ass read follows, but bear with me.

So, here's the thing. What I've noticed the most about the watch snobs is that they continually want to compare Invicta's sub-$100 watches against $1K+ watches from the higher end brands. That in and of itself is ridiculous. On top of that, why do they even try to make comparisons at all? The Invicta company, as far as I know, has never marketed itself as a Rolex, Breitling, Patek Phillipe, Devon, etc. competitor. Yet the watch snobs will go straight to talking about those brands any time Invicta is brought up in a watch conversation. Why is that? Is it because of Invicta's ridiculously inflated MSRPs? I'm guessing so. But that still makes no sense because nobody in their right mind pays full MSRP for an Invicta. From my personal experience, the typical going rate for an Invicta is between 8 and 11 percent of the MSRP on the box. Some of the harder to find pieces sell for higher, though. Yes, there are hard-to-find Invictas, if you're looking for something from the Reserve collection.

Speaking of their Reserve collection, if any comparisons to higher end pieces are to be made, the Reserve collection is where to start and end. That is unquestionably Invicta's best built collection. Hence, why they call it "Reserve." They're made with better materials, have Swiss movements, and are in some part handmade. Does that mean it's going to be as good as a Patek Phillipe Grandmaster Chime? Of course not! Don't be ridiculous. What you do compare it to is any other watch on the market at the same price point. But check out Exhibit A:

538561d1356873964-kroenender-jahresabschluss-rolex-submariner-16610-v10.jpg

To a casual observer, those are the exact same watch. However, the one on the left is an Invicta Pro Diver and the one of the right is a Rolex Submariner. I'm guessing that is from a watch snob comparison to pick apart the Invicta. But why even make the comparison? One costs maybe $80. (I don't even own an Invicta that cheap.) The other is over $5K. That's not how it works. However, to my eye, were it not for the brand names on the face, I wouldn't be able to tell you the difference between them just from looking at them. Side-by-side, I can see the Invicta is slightly bigger, but if two guys walked by at different times each wearing one of those, I'd think it was the same watch. I think Invicta has said the Pro Diver line is an homage to the Rolex Submariner line. They basically copy the look in almost exact detail. They're both automatics, but get this. The Invicta has a Seiko movement! So, if you want to compare it to something, compare it to a Seiko. BUT we always get stuff like Exhibit B from the snobs. (Not that the guy in this particular video is a snob.)

Exhibit B:
NOTE: The Invicta in this video is NOT the same model pictured above. The one in the video uses a quartz movement. Just watch the first 2:40.

Exhibit C:
Another $80 Invicta compared to $250 Seiko, $1400 Oris, $3500 Omega, and $8000 Rolex.
It's a long video.
To be fair, this video isn't one trashing the Invicta but rather something showcasing the different tiers of dive watches. But come on. An $80 Invicta in a comparison with an $8000 Rolex? Why? Even the Seiko was over 3x the price of the Invicta. Notice the movements listed on the graphic at the end; specifically the Seiko movement in the Invicta and the ETA movement in the Omega.

Knowing all that, watch snobs will still trash on Invicta while trying to compare it to watches costing 100x more.

I know this post makes me look like a massive Invicta fanboy. I'm actually not. It's just that when people make such outrageous direct comparisons, it defies all logic and sends me on a tangent. I'm not saying anybody here made comparisons. It's just a very common occurrence I see on watch forums and sites.

If anybody read all this, THANKS!

No it wwasnt a wal mart special.

What did I expect? Less than 2 year of battery and it to fall apart.
Guess what? It hasn't.

Compare a watch that has ONE function to a car battery that has many.. Great talk

Sorry but I am not an invicta guy either. They have crazy list prices and swindle people out of their money. I guess if you want a cheap watch they are not bad for their quality, BUT that is assuming that you actually pay a reasonable price for them. My biggest gripe about them is that they are worth no where near the list price and when people see them on sale for 50% off they think they just found the greatest deal of the century. I was just on a cruise where they had a "Special VIP" watch event were they had 40% off all invicta watches. They were still $500+ but people were buying them left and right.

Even discounted, I think there are much nicer watches out there for the money. If you look hard enough you can find nicely priced automatics that are quality watches. Worldofwatches.com has some killer deals sometimes. Amazon just had a sweet deal on a real gold Automatic Henry Jay.

Just my .02

What are the "many functions" a car battery has? It powers the starter to get the engine going. From that point on, the alternator does all the work.
