He was at full throttle when he hit the deck. They do that in case the pilot misses the cable, they have enough speed to take off safely.

I was more worried about the crew getting hit by the cable. That shit's dangerous.

They can easily rip a man in two. Its definitely a frightening thought.

No idea in regards to if he was coming in too fast anyways, but I don't think those prop planes can accelerate like a jet fighter can, and probably needs a higher approach speed to ensure he can take off if he misses the guide cable.

That was surely scary. I saw that happen once aboard the carrier I was stationed on. Something you never forget. I give those pilots a lot of credit for the conditions they deal with taking off and landing. Especially at night and in rough seas.
