Higher octane fuel

I've always planned on strictly using pump gas but I'm thinking about expanding my options, just for safety sake. I don't have easy access to E85 and I know that running octane boosters every fill up can hurt plugs so I'm wanting to get some insight on "race" fuel.

As of right now I've only got a tune for 93 octane but I'm thinking if I can run 96 octane or something with a race gas mix it would protect from bad gas. I have the stock fuel system with VMP BAP and 56# injectors. Would I need to modify the fuel system at all to be able to run higher octanes?

Side note, I had the car down at OCMD for Cruisin' last week and I filled the car up once down there, about 14 gallons if I remember at the Wawa on Coastal highway, the highest octane they provide lists 92. I was a little concerned about it since the tune is for 93 but tons of other high horsepower cars fill up at that station all the time so it gave me a little peace of mind.

You could always add half a can of Torco Accelerator.

Torco will be fine if you are only adding enough to raise the octane a couple of points. You wont see any plug issues unless you run a ton of it. It will turn your plug tips a brownish color but other than that you should be fine. There are several guys on here that have used it for years.

Having never used Torco or other products like it before, I'll have to do some more research first. I would assume there is some kind of ratio I am shooting for, FL OZ per Gallon = X octane.

I'm guessing you should also add in the Torco portion before filling the tank would be the recommended way to do it usually for best mixability lol

Yes, Torco gives directions on both on the bottle. I get the best price I can find on a case of 6 at ebay.

Here's the mixture chart!

Thanks for the handy link, that's the best chart I've seen so far, although I've heard some people say it's not entirely accurate, but even if I say 96 octane instead of 98, that should still provide some safety I'd assume.

Would it be a bad a idea to leave a can of Torco (or similar) in the car at all times just in case you don't have a choice of where to fill up? Not sure how the can would handle temperature changes/extreme heat. I'm sure in the Summer the interior may see 115-125*

i used the lucas octane booster a few times with out any issue - kept it around and used it for long road trips where 110 leaded wasn't available to knock the octane up. I was set up on a 98 tune but always ran a higher level than that with race gas mix. I never tracked the car on the lucas(alone) summit sells it and ships it for free- usually over night.

NOS octane booster works real well and can be purchased at any auto parts store but you'll find it for about $10 at Walmart.

I've use it a few times and it's worked great for me. I use a full bottle in a half tank of fuel and I saw total timing right there with E85 when logging on my ngauge. Not sure what octane it's bringing me up to, don't really care, as long as there's no knock, I'm happy and the extra timing was just a plus.

But to answer your original question, there is no issue running a higher octane GASOLINE on a 93 tune.

So,....what's the deal? I read that Torco is no good on your spark plugs.
Is it not good/safe to run Torco if no E85 is in someone's immediate area?

Torco and E85 are in different leagues, E85 is far superior. Me personally I would not run Torco with more timing than a 93 tune. Its perfect for insurance from a batch of bad gas but I would not personally run a tune with more timing over a pump gas tune. Then again, im rather conservative and dont like pushing things to hard :).

I've used Torco, Lucas and race gas. Lucas is the cheapest way to go, to insure fuel quality. Lucas is available at every Pep Boys, Advanced Auto, etc... The Torco caused zero issues, adding a full can per fill up. Went through a case of it. Race gas is probably the safest way to go. Had no fuel or knock issues, using any of the 3.
