Does this brace need to come off to pull the transmission from my 96 Cobra? I can't see how the transmission will drop down for me to reach the top transmission bolts if I don't remove it since the oil pan is almost touching it.

Your pic didn't come through, but if I remember right there is a tubular brace that comes off just under/ahead of the bell housing. Starter needs to come out too...that is real fun. Get some long extensions and come in from the front for that "one" bolt.

I fixed the pic above. My car doesn't have that tube brace, probably replaced with the one above because it's a convertible.

I finally got the pic to post. The black brace in the middle is what I'm talking about (looks like it's been scraped up). I can't see how the transmission will hang down far enough for me to reach the upper bolts if I don't remove this brace. I guess I'll just have to try it and see if I ever get that dang exhaust nut loose (see my other thread) so I can get the H pipe out of the way.

Thanks for your help folks.

Remove it and loosen the motor mounts, the engine will tilt back enough to reach the top bolts with some extensions and universal sockets. Or you can reach them be removing the upper and lower intake.

Ok that sounds like a plan if I can ever get to that point. Is this brace different that the single tube brace I've seen on line because it's a convertible?

Yes, convertibles came with the x-brace to improve chassis stiffness that is lost by not having a fixed roof IIRC.

That's what I thought. Long as the car doesn't fall apart when I take it off I'm good. I'm a pretty decent shadetree mechanic but this one is kicking my butt!

Exactly, I plan on taking mine off my convertible and adding a set of FLSFC's because my 7 qt. MMR oil pan would contact the factory brace. Plus, it doesn't stiffen the frame that much anyway.

At some point I want to start adding some goodies, but until now I've just been driving the car and enjoying it (it's pretty well stock except the wheels and tires). My plan was to lower it but this project has stalled that for the time being. Never in my life have I worked three days to get bolts unseized. the drive shaft bolts - three came off fine, the fourth had to be heated after the head rounded off (seems that I have a knack for that! LOL. Actually, the nuts I've had trouble with were already partly rounded).

I guess on this thing I'll just keep chiseling away until the pipe will come off and deal with the stud later. I'll keep soaking it and hopefully it will come out.

I believe this stud is a 12x1.75. Is this something the local auto parts store should have? I had to go to the dealer to get the driveshaft bolts. I was going to replace them with regular bolts but the heads look too big.
