Can I use S550 exhaust cams in 11-14?

Hi all,

I've got a new crate engine in my 2011 Coyote. It's got the 2015 cams/Phasers/chains etc.

I've been told I need to change back to 11-14 VCT for the engine to run properly. I keep getting bank 1 and 2 intake cams over retarded codes.

I've heard that the S550 exhaust cams can be used with the 11-14 so I don't need to change them, is this correct? Or do I also need to change the exhaust cams for 11-14 ones?

Many thanks.

Okay thanks for the help. So I can leave the S550 exhaust cams in there but need to change the exhaust cam phaser to 11-14 correct?
No only the intake phasers use the midlock timing according to the article. Id keep the s550 phaser on the s550 exhaust camshaft. Who told you this information to begin with?

Right I see. Well a tuner told me that intakes will definitely need changing so I would have to use the 11-14 chains. So with the chains I also need to change the exhaust Phasers becauuse the S550 Phasers won't work with the 11-14 chains?

I was going to tell you to go ask the camshaft god Shaun at AED, but he liked my comment, so there ya go lol.

Yeah I sent Shaun an email about the exhaust cams but he instantly wanted to know who's tuned my car (don't know what that's got to do with it as this is to do with the S550 cams that came in my crate engine but hey!) as soon as I told him Lund have tuned my car he didn't want to know and fobbed me off and wouldn't tell me anything and just told me to listen to my tuner. Really don't know what he's going on about this has absolutely nothing to do with Lund or tuning!!

I was actually looking into getting an AED custom tune to try against my Lund but Shaun can do one now with that attitude. I've go no time for people like that. I know Shaun knows whether I need to change the exhaust cams or not and he's purposely not telling me because he's obviously got some beef with Lund. Hell I even offered to pay him if he told me!

So looks like I'll do this by trail and error I won't bother changing the exhaust cams or Phasers I'll keep them and see how it goes. If it doesn't work then I'll have to rip the engine apart again and get the exhaust side as well.

First, I am pretty sure he asks everyone who has tuned their car right away. He asked me, and had reservations when I told him I used Bama for 600 miles. I had to convince him of my driving habits in order to become one of his customers, otherwise he did not want to deal with an engine that was shit all over by Bama.

Second, this is a gentleman's trade. I bet he told you to listen to your tuner out of respect for Lund. These guys are not cutthroat. Don't take it personally man. Have you approached Lund with these questions?

Ah right it's not just me then. I know he probably doesn't want to seem like stepping on Lund's toes but this isn't anything to do with tuning. This is to do with 2015 VCT that came in my crate engine, and I'm having to switch it back to 11-14 as my 2011 PCM does not support the S550 mid lock Phasers etc.

And thought I would ask Shaun as he's probably very knowledgable about this whole thing.

I've asked Lund and they don't seem to think the cams/Phasers are playing up but I've been watching my datalogs closely and I've got basically ZERO cam movement, car is down on power because cams aren't advancing which is probably being caused by the false knock which the VCT is causing because I'm trying to run 15 VCT on my 2011 PCM. Thing is laying down about 80rwhp less than it should.

Plus every other person I've ever heard of has had to switch back to 11-14 VCT and components when on a pre 15 PCM so I'm 99% sure it's my 15 VCT. That and the engine is brand new and been doing this instal so it's not the engine. Just installed PMAS and still the same so it's gotta be the cams/Phasers.

80RWHP? That is insane! Wow. Yeah without a doubt its associated with your camshafts, I just wish you had a 100% no shit feeling about those exhaust phasers.

Yeah I know, well I took it to a strict dyno here in the UK. We don't have many happy dynos around me! And it ran 306rwhp where with intake/tune/bassani exhaust I would imagine to see about 390rwhp on dyno jet or about 360-370rwhp on this strict dyno. It put down just shy of 400 lb/ft torque though on the strict dyno which is decent. I think it's all down to not advancing the cams which is why they aren't moving. It's holding the car back and you can feel it while driving too like it's hesitating.

Yeah I know well just thinking, the exhaust Phasers will have to be 11-14 because the 15+ and 11-14 chains are different so I'll have to use 11-14 Phasers but keep the S550 exhaust cams in there I believe.

Issue now is finding a garage to take on the 2 days worth a labour!

You could just revert back to 11-14 exhaust camshafts. I read the only difference between the 11-14 and s550 exhaust cams is extra lift, which does little for the coyote horsepower wise.

Yeah I mean I would just switch the whole lot back but to 11-14 if I don't need exhaust cams, it saves me another $300 in what is already an expensive fix.

Yeah I think that's why people are saying just keep the exhaust cams in there. I'm going to try and claim all this money back from the company that sold me the engine though. They said it was a direct replacement for my 2011...yeah right! Caused me such a headache!!!

The Boss exhaust camshaft part numbers have been replaced with the 15 GT exhaust camshafts so yes you can use those cams. You'll also get the higher lift of the Boss or 15+ GT exhaust cams over the 11-14 GT cams.
