If I go out to eat larger meals with the wife I usually tip 20 percent of the bill if its good service, less for bad service. I've recently started eating lunch at a restaurant off the lunch menu and the bill is usually $7.50 without a tip. Now 20% of that bill is only $1.50 which doesn't seem like much so I usually tip about $2.50 which is closer to 35%. So do you tip more on smaller bills?

Also do you tip the person that brings you the food at carry out at restaurants? pizza hut for example has a spot for tipping on the receipt. A friend who worked at papa johns said no one ever tips when picking up food.

I don't base lower costing meals on percent. I do cap expensive meals on it though.

I base tips on effort, even if you screw up, if you are trying I'll tip you.

I tip on take out at only a few places, mostly family owned restaurants that have nice management/staff.

I do tip a little more on the smaller bills. Like I would do the 2.5 tip on a 7.50 meal.

No tip on takeout. I do what you do as well. I start with a base of 20% then adjust accordingly based on performance and attitude and will add more on a small bill if I sat and was served.

I usually tip 20% or more unless the service is horrible. On smaller tickets (less than $10), if the service is good I will tip at least 50% or more. I do however tip $1 on takeout. Also tip if we eat at Sonic.

I tip on everything. most of the time its 20%. If service is really crap maybe 10-12% I'll stop going to places if they don't figure out their ishty service by about trip 3 or 4.

I tip on Take out, alcohol only, big meals, small meals.... Usually i tip 20-25% the first couple times i visit a restaurant. Then I'll hover in the 18-25% depending on night. Take out i'll tip a few bucks. $2-3 on a $20-40 bill.
I try to get a rapport with a bartender or person from the wait staff. it seems my service is usually better than other patrons after I've "made friends" with someone. It sucks you have to do this at some places but if i like the place and plan on coming back i feel its better buy service a few times rather than get ignored and get upset everytime i show up. At the very least if you are friendly with the bar tender your drinks are stiff.

I generally tip 20-30% unless the entire experience is just unbelievably terrible. I'm pretty forgiving on service. On smaller bills I'll go all the way up to 100%, the smallest tip I'll generally leave is $5. I figure a server at some lunch joint is only making $2-5/hr, so I'll throw them at least $5 so they're not getting totally screwed on a lunch shift. Take out I always do 10-15%.

I tip well.

Minimum tip is $5 regardless of the bill, I believe in karma. Typically I stay between 20-25% on expensive meals; a little more or a little less depending on the service.

I do round UP to the nearest whole dollar.

Example: $118.37 bill. 25% would be $29.60. I would tip $29.63 for an out the door of $148.

I never tip carry out, 20% or so on everything else. There are a few places I regular where I'm friends with the bartenders and I'll tip them 30-50% depending on where the total is. I'm usually getting free beer and things though. I have no problem stiffing a waiter and telling them why now that my patience for shitty people is at an all time low these days.

I'm pretty similar.

I usually max out at 22% though, which there probably aren't many servers who would be upset about that.

My minimum is also $5 if they are actually serving me, if it's take out I'll tip a buck or two depending on meal price.

Just had lunch sitting at a bar. Bill $46.98 on credit card and tipped $15
cash. I always tip in cash money.
