I have this fairly loud slapping noise occurring. It does not happen when the car is idling cold. It only taps one or two times as the car starts up and then nothing. But it really shows up after going for a drive. After about 5 minutes of driving around it starts a steady tapping with the engine revolutions. As I accelerate the tapping goes away, come to a stop and the tapping returns at idle. Once I get the car back home, it will tap for about 5 minutes at idle and then it completely go away.

At first, I thought it was a bad pulley because I have had one of those RR manual tensioners for the longest. And adjusting that while the car was running would make the tapping go away. So I pulled the pulleys off and discovered that a bunch of them were going bad. Replaced those, as well as the manual tensioner to the Thump RRR one. Noise is still there so I am unfortunately leaning towards this being an engine issue.

I checked for exhaust leaks. Nothing there.
Changed the oil because I hear a bad lifter can quiet down a bit when it gets fresh oil. Not sure how true that is, though.

Just waiting for the rain to stop and I will take it out and get a video for you guys to listen to.
Until then, any ideas what this might be? Things I can troubleshoot while waiting on the rain?
Thinking maybe the supercharger is in need of a rebuild since the noise changed / went away when adjusting the tensioner while the car was running?

A tob will do this also..any change in noise when clurch push in and out..

What lower pulley?

Stock is known to tap when rubeer bushings wear..

What oil filter? Some are known to tick as will a loose oil filter shaft..

Odds of a lifter are slim

I had the main tensioners go bad before. They would cause a random tap. I finally located the noise to the front of the engine. Swapped the tensioners and all was quiet.

Take the blower belt off and fire up the car. If the noise is gone that greatly limits the possibilities of what could be making the noise.

Changed the oil and the noise went away, at least for now. Took it out for a 20 minute drive and the noise didn't show up. Was doing it in about 5 minutes before. I tried taking the blower belt off to test it before, it didn't make the noise, but I am unsure if that was the solution because the noise would intermittently appear and go away at idle with the belt on. Wasn't sure if it was safe to drive it around without the front belt because it is on a balls to the wall tune right now.

Going to take it on a slightly longer drive tomorrow with my tools and stethoscope to see if the noise comes back I can diagnose it on the spot.

Well, the noise completely goes away with the front belt off. I am going to guess that it is the Whipple in need of a rebuild.

When you grab the pulley of a supercharger and quickly rotate it clockwise and counter clockwise, kinda like jiggling it, should there be some play / noise? Or should it be relatively smooth / no noise? Mine makes a slight tapping noise each time direction is changed quickly. No play when wiggling it, just when rotating.

Thinking maybe having that manual tensioner torqued down on there for so many years caused too much stress on the supercharger snout.
