I've recently been actively interviewing for jobs which will require me to move 1500+ miles away. The last two interviews have asked me how long it would take me to get moved. My question is what is the typical time frame to make a move such as this? I'm not currently working so I don't have to worry about giving a notice. I do have a wife, 3 kids, a house, 5 cars, two storage sheds and a BUNCH of crap. This is gonna happen within the next 5 months so I need to start planning.

sell everything, and donate the junk. The less shit you have to haul across the nation the better. Also, have fun shipping 5 cars LOL

Since you'll have to de-clutter when you sell your home that will be a good time to sell items and throw away a lot of unused stuff you don't want to haul with you.

I moved 1,200 miles away and paid a company to pack my things and load/unload it all. Their availability was 4-6 weeks to pack. One week after to deliver.

List your house, and it will sell in time.

When the moving company is ready go back and watch them pack. Took them two days.

I did this twice. From OK to PA and PA to OK five years later. Different homes.

you better sell your house first before setting up a timeline. It could take a week or it could take 6 months. Right now (winter) is the WORST time to sell.

Took me about 6 weeks from offer to do a 500 mi move out of state. House, dog, pregnant wife and 3 cars. Sold as much non essential junk as possible and flew my mom out to drive one of the cars, towed another and had a 24' uhaul truck.

How long should it take me to get to moved once I accept a job?
. This is dependent a lot on how prepared you are when the time comes. I packed up and moved myself in a week. If I had to do it now it would take me a month probably.

You should start selling stuff now, check into moving van rates, u haul rates, and if you don't want to sell your cars how much to ship them. If you have a friend you can leave some of them with you could drive two rent a one way car to drive you, your wife, and a friend back and drive the other three to your new place over a long weekend,

Planning is everything and if you start now you could probably do it in a couple weeks if your expected move date is five months down the road

you can negotiate a relocation allowance in your hiring package.
takes a lot of the the stress off your mind so you can focus on the new job and new surroundings.

I dont think there is a set time. Sounds like once they offer the job they are gonna want you there pretty quick though but moving all of your things and family is a major undertaking.

Ive had a few friends take a job, move there and rent a room from someone or a crappy apartment. The wife and kids can come visit and you all can pick a new place together. I really think that works the best so you dont end up living in a crappy part of town, renting/buying what you dont want because youre rushed, etc.

If you're applying and interviewing, I'd expect an employer to want you within two weeks of accepting an offer.

Then again, you could always say the hell with the family, get a room with a twin and win!

I would ask them what their timeframe is.
I have no idea what field you are in and what they are hiring you for.
Is your wife working or a stay home mom?
Can you go ahead and find accomodations while she takes care of packing up and getting things ready?
I'm assuming they are looking for someone because they need someone.

My brother and his wife are going through this now when he took a new job out of state. They're still trying to get it all done in two weeks (he's been flying back to help pack), in total they have been trashing, selling, and packing for two months. This is a house they've been in 15 years, a few toys, a garage full of tools/car parts and only two cars, he sold his other to not deal with it.

If you're definitely looking to move out of state, start selling cars and everything else now, it will take a lot longer than you think.

I moved to charleston, sc from rapid city, sd, and it ran me 7k bucks to ship everything, not counting vehicles. I flew back to get my truck and pull my 5.0 behind it another 27 hour drive and this one after tearing my miniscus and also bring my dobie with me. You will have to prioritize what is of most value to you and cut losses accordingly. My house back in south dakota took 63 days to sell so i got lucky there. Good luck on your new adventure.

I'm interviewing for Director of Radiology jobs, my wife is a dental assistant but we are thinking about letting her stay at home. We have been in this house for 11 years and have accumulated way too much. I was just curious on what to say when asked how long it would take me to start. I don't want take a chance of losing a position because I say that I need too much time but I don't wanna kill myself with an unrealistic timeline either.
