Got my first bike helmet back in 2015 and realized it was too narrow for me (icon airframe pro ghost carbon). I still wear it when I ride but have been thinking of getting a modular helmet.
I know the repercussions of a modular helmet, anyone else use them for riding (no track use)?

I recently tried on a Shoei Neotec, yes it's a little heavier than a carbon fiber helmet, but it was awesome! I can spit, drink if I wanted too and putting on the helmet is a little easier. The other plus is it has a visor and basically internal shades of you will. Much more comfortable too since I don't have a narrow head. The price is about the same at $600.

I tried on a medium and barely fit in, but thinking of getting thinner cheek pads and a thinner crown. I check out the reviews on revzilla and helmets pads breakin about 10%.

Has anyone tried going to a smaller sized helmet and bought thinner pads, liner? I where a large but want to give medium a shot.

Try a different brand. Every helmet fits differently. I personally like arai and they fit me the best. Ive also had luck with scorpion, go somewhere wnd try all of the helmets in stock on until you find one that works

My belief is that you will be compromising safety if you try to go with a thinner liner.
Since it was designed as a touring helmet it is not designed to fit as tight as a helmet designed for racing.
The Neotec is built on 3 shell sizes. the smallest is for XS, S and M, a different shell for L, and a third shell size for XL, and XXL.
Here is an older albeit thorough review.

are you sure it's not fitting right? You want a little squeeze on your cheeks and you don't want movement when shaking your head.

That being said, you can't go wrong with Shoei or Arai.

I hate the idea of modular helmets. I wouldn't trust one.

That being said, your helmet should be snug. Your head shouldn't be able to move inside the helmet easily, but it should still be comfortable.

As said, try a few different brands to see how they fit. Cheek pads will break in a little as you wear your helmet, too.

I normally wear a large but tried on a medium and it was a very tight fit, I'm thinking of going medium and getting the thinner padding that's available so I can have a smaller lighter helmet.
Has anyone ever tried that? I took the same gamble with my Kevlar by getting a medium helmet and just bought the internal liner from a military shop in Oceanside. It worked perfect. Helmet was snug, comfortable and I didn't look like a mushroom head.

Did You read my post above?
As mentioned the Neotec uses 3 different shell sizes. Most models use 2 shell sizes. They didn't spend the additional money on an additional shell size for the fun of it.
Looking like "a mushroom head" should not be the primary factor.

The difference in weight between medium and large is gonna be minimal at best. Me personally i keep the helmet as it came because it was designed that way. The size difference in helmet too is not just in the padding it is the overall size meaning you can swap pads out all you want but if it was not meant to be your size it is not gonna fit right. Its your head and your choice but i would rather get the right size and safe my skull in a wreck instead of trying to make the wrong size fit. A helmet need to fit you as it is, if it doesn't fit then move on to another. Cyclegear lets you try on until you find your fit so i would check there first

A full helmet is safer than a modular is safer than a 3/4 is safer than a 1/2... and so on.

A helmet is better than no helmet.

The way I look at it- if you're worried that a modular helmet will fail during a wreck and tear your jaw off, you have other problems to worry about too.

You should go to a cycle shop and try on a few helmets- know they will be tight until broken in a little. Ordering online may save a few $$$ but the fit is a gamble. I have a HJC medium that is larger than a HD brand large (for some strange reason). They're all different.

I would get a full face for sure. I like the helmets that have the integrated "shades"....it should pinch your cheeks a little bit and not move much when you shake your head...but you don't want super tight either

I drove 3.5 hours and spent the afternoon in a helmet shop, trying on everything in my size. Wearing a helmet that is the wrong size or has pressure points is miserable. Enjoy the ride, get the right helmet.

I would never buy a modular, for obvious reasons.

You should do more research on your helmets before buying one. Each brand sells numerous shapes and sizes. Some brands like Arai and Shoei have more shapes available than others. Don't get caught up with the carbon fiber either. A lot of people buy the most expensive helmet they can, which are mostly tracking helmets, when a touring helmet would be far quitter and more comfortable, even if they weigh slightly more.

Also, if you can shake your head and make your helmet move, it's not tight enough.
