I have a Mustang with a T56 installed. I assume it was used [when installed] so miles unknown. The issue is the second gear downshift at times. I don't recall the issue before the fluid was changed. The fluid was nasty looking. The trans said on it to use Dextron 3, so I did. I'll have to see if it is a synthetic blend, but either the transmission synchro is worn or it doesn't like the fluid in it. Anyone run into this or know the best fluid to use? First and second synchos have a friction material added to them.

Switching from Stock Ford ATF to Amsoil Full Synthetic ATF made a big difference.

But it didn't solve everything. It still shifted poorly from two to three. Sometime I just could not get it in gear at all. And the clutch was not failing to disengage.

So I bought a Tremec Magnum T-56. Now that really made a difference!

I tore the tranny apart and the syncro rings were out of spec, and shift fork pads were garbage on the 1-2 and 3-4. worse on the 3-4 but never had any issues on either gear. So changing them to brass, despite what Tremec says.

I was quick to blame the T56 syncro design, but my aluminum flywheel plate is badly warped. This might have put enough pressure on the clutch to cause premature syncro wear.

I used to run Castrol Dexron 3 for like 80k. Within 10k of switching to RP synchromesh, developed a problem with grinding in 4th gear.

Been running amsoil torque drive since. Maybe my t56 was due maybe it was the RP. I will never know.

I've been running Amsoil ATF for the past 25k miles with no issues. I change it once a year however.

Doesn't Tremec recommend upgrading to the brass pads? They sell them through D&D.

I also highly recommend Amsoil ATF for your T-56, however....if your transmission has worn parts, it's only a bandaid fix. Since you rebuilt the transmission, start with Amsoil ATF from day #1.

I've been running Pennzoil Synchromesh in every T56 I've owned and/or installed. It just flat out works and it's cheap.
