I can understand on certain levels what you are saying. The beautiful Raptor you posted above isn't near the exaggeration of what I have seen. But I have seen these lifts on full size 2wd trucks and I can't imagine for the life of me doing any kind of sand running in 2wd but I don't know much of the sport so I could be wrong. And we got dunes in the southeast, well at least in Georgia, we just stick to our atv's out there though ;-)

Actually believe it or not most trophy trucks are 2WD, but I see a trend moving towards 4x4 now, while still maintaining long travel. The idea behind 2wd/long travel is if you are running at high rates of speed in the desert, the extra weight of the 4x4 components are not needed. Its not like these trucks are built for rock crawling or anything, they are just built for running open desert as fast as possible. Also the trucks are extremely durable and are very expensive. Here is some 2WD love:

There isn't even open desert out in North Carolina.

Close enough. I've hit mid 40s down the beach with rock crawling suspension. I dream of getting a built raptor and flying through the ruts down there.

And just to add some funny to my post, here's a pic of my gf from our last trip to the Outer Banks. Not a photoshop.
