NEW PRODUCT: LETHAL PERFORMANCE T-56 TOB Retainer Sleeve

This is a must for all when doing a clutch swap. As most of us know one of the weak points in the 03-04 Cobra T-56 is the Thowout Bearing and it's sleeve. Most of the time the TOB will go bad and start making squeeking and squeeling noises. If the issue isn't fixed in a reasonable amount of time the TOB will wear away at the TOB retainer sleeve and actually snap it in half. This can be a costly problem to fix if you're vehicle isn't covered by warranty anymore. So Lethal Performance now has the solution. A High Quality 4340 Forged Steel TOB Retainer Sleeve. The Sleeve comes with a genuine Tremec transmission seal and O-Ring for a perfect fit. By installiing this piece you will increase the durability and life of your transmission without a doubt.

These are in stock and now shipping for $114.99

So if my TOB isn't squealing then I don't have to worry about the retainer getting damaged?

My trans is out at the moment getting the clutch replaced and I like the idea of "cheap" (compared to the price of a new tranny) insurance, but I'm not positive I need this part. If it was $60, I'd jump on it no questions asked, but at twice that amount I need a little convincing. :)

I am curious too. Can I just replace this, or should I do it when I replace the clutch??

Thanks.

From what I understand, if your TOB is working properly (IE not squealing, not spinning when your foot is off the clutch) then there's no extra wear being placed on sleeve and there's no risk of it being damaged.

But if you're one of those people (and apparently there are quite a lot of them) whose car has a misadjusted clutch that wears out TOBs in a hurry, then this part might save you some grief down the road.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong--this is just what I've interpreted from reading posts on the forum.

Just wait for when you do a clutch swap. Just make sure and do everything when you do the clutch swap. It will be pricey but it will save you money in the long run. What I mean by everything is 26 spline, clutch, flywheel, tob, tob sleeve retainer. This will save you money on labor costs which pulling a tranny isnt cheap even if you do it yourself it takes quite a bit of time.

Ill be doing my setup in the next month.

good luck,
Josh

I had one put in when i replaced my clutch and i love it. My tob always made noise. i had it fixed at the dealer twice and it would last about five days and start making noise again. i tried a firewall adjuster and clutch quadrent and it didnt help with the noise (but i do like it for clutch adjustment). this is the onlything that worked for me. Its also cheap insurace. PS who buys a $35k car and complanes about a $115 for a part

Friends started telling me this was a common brake on the Terminators. I was having noises coming from my throwout bearing so I bought the retainer sleeve as well. I pulled my tranny in my garage and sure enough, the retainer sleeve had snapped in two. I'm just glad there was no other damage, other than my motor taking a dump the following weekend.

TOB and the Sleeve hands down. Just got my car back today. Did some research and decided thats what needed to be replaced. Sure enough the bareing was toast and the sleeve was torn to hell. Changing those 2 parts not only got rid of the squeel but it shifts ALOT better now IMO than it did when it was new (Partially cause it always felt like it wanted to pop out of gear when it was cold). Anyway took it out for a little test run and I'm more than satisfied now.

Both parts I got off of Lethal Performance BTW, Centerforce. Good stuff.

What are the some of the difference?

Yea mine started squealing 3 days ago. I am currently saving up for new clutch 26 spline and the tob with the sleeve. This will be a good time to do all the tranny work considering i just threw 100 hp to the car.

I was going to make a post about my tranny not letting me into 6th (grinds feels like a gravel road) and when I preload hard enough it will pop out of gear. I can hear a slight howling when I let the clutch out while I'm not moving, so it sounds like I will also buy a tob and retainer. Thanks loads guys (just spent 20k on car don't need anymore problems)

OK.....I started getting the squeeking and was told it was my TOB....I started looking in to getting an upgraded clutch and a few extra parts for increased strength(26 spline upgrade TOB retainer sleeve ect.) but yesterday(11/20/07) I was about 8 miles from home and my clutch starting making a nasty howling/grinding sound every time I pushed the petal down, then about 4 miles from home it went to a ear shattering howling screaming sound every time I pushed on the clutch....I made it home safe but the car sounded HORRIBLE......I am guessing the TOB retainer sleeve died a painfull death??? Would this be a correct assumption?? Should I worry that my tranny or anything else was damaged if so what else???
This is my first manual tranny so Im learning every day so someone tell me what Ishould expect when I drop the tranny and do the TOB/Clutch/flywheel and now after reading this TOB retainer sleeve install.
Well my buddy who has experience with doing clutch installs will be doing the work I will be watching/learning and assisting.
The parts I plan on installing are........Center Force DFX clutch kit,Ram steel flywheel, new TOB and now aTOB retainer sleeve(from Lethal of course).
I would do the 26 spline upgrade but I cant afford it right now and have to get the car running ASAP.
I know its a(or was) $35K car but the Holidays are here and I have a wedding to pay for in Sept. so I cant afford the extra scratch to upgrade to 26 spline right now, besides I am only putting down 450/450 to the tires and dont drag every weekend and probably wont be adding any more power until after the wedding.
WHEW.....sorry for the long post but please chime in and sorry if this is considered thread hyjacking......Im not sure because Im internet/computer retarted.
John.

John,

Sounds like a bad TOB and/or a broken TOB Sleeve. I wouldn't worry about damage to the transmission but you definitely want to get this stuff fixed as soon as possible to avoid possible damage.

As far as the 26 spline goes you don't have to go that route now. The DFX is an aggressive clutch and even though your making under 500rwhp you still do run the risk of breaking the stock 10 spline shaft. You risk that with the stock clutch as well but a little more so with the DFX as it's a real good grabbing clutch that doesn't slip. We've got plenty of guys running the 10 spline DFX setup though and have no issues. So it's really a toss up.

Give us a call of you have any other questions. Don't forget about the 5% Holiday Coupon listed below in my sig. Thanks and have a Happy Thanksgiving! Jared@Lethal
