Ok I posted a previous thread a few days ago but I’m starting over because I have different questions ? Just to let you guys know what’s going on my car has been going into limp mode and getting dead peddle so I took it to a mechanic who replaced the supercharger intercooler water pump . After he did that the car went in limp again so took it back they couldn’t get it to go into limp again so I went and picked it up and brought it back home. That’s said I have been researching and thinking maybe it could be the VSS I found this online that says:
“”” If the P0297 is reset, and there are no other transmission symptoms or codes, suspect a VSS problem.””
The mechanics have cleared it multiple times and it came up again when I ran the OBD myself
That said does the VSS seem like a possible cause of the issues I am having with my car now and in the past ?
Limp mode
Dead pedal
Rough idol
Terrible Gas mileage
Etc
I texted the mechanic who replaced the intercooler water pump and asked if he tested the VSS and he said no he didn’t test that he said he was concentrating on fixing the limp mode ,
but can’t that cause limp too ?
Today tried to see if I could get a mechanic to run an DVOM but the ones I went today said they don’t work on specialty cars and said my car is specialty car
What do you guys think ?

Saw your other thread but can’t recall; you had that VSS code?

I’m almost positive when the TB failed on both my Fords, there was a VSS code. The limp mode turned off everything speed/power related.

Automatic and wouldn’t shift.

No I didn’t have the VSS code but the codes I got and the codes the mechanic were not exactly the same I did get the P0297 code myself and have had different mechanics ask if I had been going fast over rev etc but I haven’t been and nobody else drives my car. I can’t think of anything else it could be I went and picked it up because they kept trying to get it to go into limp mode but it is random when it does
I don’t know what else it could be and the crazy thing is the car only has 28k miles and as tempting as it is I haven’t been ragging it and abusing it in a way that would cause issues if I have to I will replace the VSS myself but I wanted to see what you guys said and if that is even a possibility

This is how VSS works and how its communicated from the PCM.

Vehicle Speed Limiter

The PCM disables some or all of the fuel injectors whenever a vehicle over speed condition is detected. The purpose of the vehicle speed limiter is to prevent damage to the powertrain. Once the driver reduces the excessive vehicle speed, the engine returns to the normal operating mode. No repair is required. However, the technician should clear the DTCs and inform the customer of the reason for the DTC.

Either excessive wheel slippage caused by sand, gravel, rain, mud, snow, ice or excessive RPM increase in neutral may cause the vehicle speed limiter to activate even though the vehicle has not exceeded the maximum speed limit.

Powertrain Control Module - Vehicle Speed Output (PCM-VSO)

The PCM-VSO speed signal subsystem generates vehicle speed information for distribution to modules and subsystems that require vehicle speed data. This subsystem senses the transmission output shaft speed with a sensor. The data is processed by the PCM and distributed as a message on the vehicle communication network.

The key features of the PCM-VSO system are to:

  • infer vehicle movement from a speed sensor.
  • convert transmission output shaft rotational information to vehicle speed information.
  • compensate for tire size and axle ratio with a programmed calibration variable.
  • distribute vehicle speed information as a multiplexed message.
The signal from a non-contact shaft sensor, such as an output shaft speed (OSS) sensor or vehicle speed sensor (VSS), mounted on the transmission is sensed directly by the PCM. The PCM converts the OSS or VSS information to 8,000 pulses per mile, based on a tire and axle ratio conversion factor. This conversion factor is programmed into the PCM at the time the vehicle is assembled and can be reprogrammed in the field for changes in the tire size and axle ratio. The PCM transmits the computed vehicle speed and distance traveled information to all vehicle speed signal users on the vehicle.

I noticed on your other thread there were multiple Comm faults from the scan. There could be a communication issue with a module, or possible loose connectector within the network system? First thing I would do is scan your modules and the network system for issues and health.

No experience with your particular car but have seen a VSS failure where the vehicle has no throttle response and would give you a dead pedal, sorry if that isn’t much help

Thanks Yes It did have a code saying communication issue but also had one about restraints and abs I asked the mechanic if he checked the wires and he said yes. (At this point I don’t know how much that means ) he was telling me he scanned everything and they had a hard time finding anything wrong and finally thought the supercharger intercooler pump looked suspicious when they pulled it ? ( I didn’t see it ) at one point they have tried blaming the steeda tune for the CAI that I put on it a long time ago for its problems . But I have previously been told the time was good. He had rambled on about what all he checked but I asked today if he checked the VSS and he said no the pic is of the data I got from my obd2 scanner

Thanks it helps that you know VSS can cause dead pedal I’m just trying to figure something out

Thanks When it first started happening I thought it was the TB but more than one has told me the TB is fine

IMO......if there was an issue with VSS sensor you would of gotten a DTC related fault. There are no DTC fault codes for any input sensor related to this P0297 fault but there are plenty of com issues.

Thanks so what do you think it could be ? I was assuming the VSS based on the symptoms I was getting I just got my scanner yesterday so haven’t been able to scan myself when it has had a light yet
the PO297 may not be new because I have had multiple mechanics ask if I have been over rev and speed etc they just said they got a code for it but I don’t remember if they even told me which code it was

Im not saying it is failing because I have not personally verified it or inspected your car but I have seen odd ball DTC's and comm faults with ECU/PCM's that are failing. You might consider sending your PCM out and have it tested to rule that out. Its hard to say. I can assume many things @BCICAN but thats not how i do things. I personally would turn this car inside out and find the problem if it's electrical. You just have to have the right tools. Based on the faults provided above. It appesars to be an issue with the PCM and communications.

With alllllllllllllll those codes.... i would stick a new battery in it and tighten everything up real well... maybe a weak or defective battery is causing havoc.

Thanks I had previously mentioned the PCM to the last guy and he kinda acted like it was a non issue and said “the one that stood out and was a little particular was the over speed condition”
Uggg
I live in DFW it has 7.6 million people and I have lost count of how many mechanics I have taken it to and here I am trying to figure it out myself I don’t have the best luck lol

Thanks I haven’t noticed any problems with the battery but I will try that too

there HAS to be a short somewhere... communication issue... u even got a restraint light/abs light... get a manual and a multimeter and start testing. ORRR maybe u get lucky and u got a funky battery that isnt providing constant voltage.,

Thanks I’ll try that too I asked if they had checked shorts and wires and they said yes but I honestly don’t know if I trust anything they have told me

they didnt... thats gonna get very involved. i would start just looking at any frayed harness near anything hot.. like the exhaust.... on my 2013 gt... i vaguely remember replacing a ground strap that ran through the passenger compartment to the engine bay.... i had a stability control/ traction control idiot light that kept coming on........... worn out ass wire that was shorting. super weird.

Can you pull up a description of what the “invalid data from PCM” implies.

Does it mean invalid data to the scanner?

I’d look for a common failure point with all these different circuits.

You have a Steeda tune in it?
