So my wife got me the Ford Performance grille for Christmas and I am trying to decide if I want to paint the surround gloss black to like my factory black package grille (or switch surrounds) or leave if matte. I am not sure how well the matte will blend with the rest. The black package is already a good mix of matte and gloss, so I am not sure if it needs to be gloss, I just do not want it to stand out. The matte without paint would be nice against chips, etc. as the gloss black surround currently is a magnet for such things due to its position.

What do you guys think? I attached a pic of my truck along with the new grille...

Looks good as it is to me. You could get the surround wrapped in gloss or satin black, shouldn't be too expensive. Plus you can take it off if you decide you like the matte better, or if it gets dinged up..

Painting grills is tough, especially plastic. A rock chip here and there and it'll look terrible in no-time.

That's really what worries me. Even the factory painted surround is easily scratched. I have had to polish out blemishes a few times. It looks really good, but I am not sure if it is enough to do it for the new grille. I just wonder if the matte surround would stand out that much. Like I said in the OP, there is a balance of matte and gloss already on the truck.

I'd definitely vote to leave it as-is.

Wrapping is a great idea because you can experiment over time and still revert to the original finish later. I'd like to see a photo showing more of the front end. To my eye, something just doesn't like right. Maybe it's just the photo.

Here is a pic I took after getting to work this morning. Ignore the dirt. Driving after a snow sucks.

I am waiting to install the new grille along with the new intercooler.

'Tis true.

People love to bash the new Ranger for some reason, but it is a very good truck. I appreciated your review as it was very fair and well-informed. I can run circles around the competition and look much better.

I honestly do miss the previous generation Ranger. My father has my old '04 and it is still going strong and looks great. Yes, it does not have as much power, room, and rides rougher, but a lot can be said about its perfect size, styling, and simplicity.
