Hello Everyone,

I got the deck lid and rear portion of the driver's QTR panel sanded today.

I'm going to wet sand the whole car with 1000 grit to knock down the orange peel and then sand the whole car with step 1 of the dry sanding process.

After that I will dry sand the whole car with steps 2 and 3. I hope steps 2 and 3 will go VERY fast since the paint will be flat and even.

Here you can clearly see how this sanding process works.

This is after wet sanding with 1000 grit. You can see the clear coat on the deck lid is flat and the orange peel is gone. However, there is little to no gloss and there are a lot of scratches left behind.

This is after step 1 of the dry sanding process. The heavy scratches are out and a fine haze is left behind and now you can see the reflection of the lights and my garage door.

Different angle. You can see the reflection of my garage ceiling lights and my open garage door.

Okay everyone,

As mentioned before, I'm not one to only show the good stuff. There are plenty of bad things and hurdles to overcome. Remember it's not how many failures you have, but how you deal with those failures LOL.

I was wet sanding the driver's side today and noticed this. It's the dreaded solvent pop. I remember spraying this area and getting a little more on the panel than I intended, but didn't realize it was this much clear.
20211204_112812.jpg

There is NO way this will buff out. I will have to repaint this area. Figures, the area I screw up is in the graphic.
20211204_112819.jpg

I swear the driver's side seems to be the problem side LOL.
20211204_112824.jpg

Time to get out the sander and go back to square 1. So, I sanded the area using 400 grit with a DA.
20211204_121335.jpg

Then I finished off the bad area with 600 grit wet. Then I sanded the QTR panel and rocker panel with 800 grit wet. I'm going to have to blend those areas so I have to prepare them for paint or clear coat.
20211204_125216.jpg

Time to mask everything up. Damn, didn't I just do this? LMAO!!! All I can do is laugh at this point.
20211204_135839.jpg

That white foam tape is used to keep from having a hardline develop. It will make the blending and polishing process easier.

After I got the bad area fixed and ready for paint, I finished masking it off.

I put the foam tape around the edge of the QTR panel. I'm not going to paint the whole QTR, but I am going to re-clear the whole thing.

Here everything is masked off, plastic sheeted and foam taped.
20211204_143511.jpg

First I had to spray the bare metal with etching primer.

Here is the first coat of black.
20211204_145233.jpg

Here is the final coat of black. Everything is smooth and even again. I ended up putting 3 coats of black. Now I will let it dry overnight and then re-tape the graphics tomorrow. Got to love having to do things over again.

Here you can see how that foam tape works. It also keeps the over spray out of the jams. I'll reaffix the foam tape tomorrow after I get the graphics re-taped off.

Bummer deal but outstanding attitude and getting right to it to get fixed

Thank you Geoff! I was very frustrated at first. This mistake is in a very bad place. One that is difficult to fix because it's in the graphic and there is so much to re-spray and blend. A door, fender, trunk and hood are easy fixes. The QTR and Roof are difficult because there really is no body line to use as a separating point.

I have to be honest, part of my motivation is the weather. This weekend it's in the 70's here. Next week it's supposed to start getting cold. So, I need to paint while it's warm.

Another motivating factor is I purchased a new paint gun. It's supposed to lay clear down a little smoother than my old gun. I have to use my old gun to spray the color because I need to make sure the metallics and pearl are put down the same. So, I'm a little excited to use my new gun too.

Okay everyone,

Went to work in the garage today LOL. Had to get that paint job knocked out. I have to say it came out great! Man, I wish I had my new gun when I sprayed the whole car. That thing is amazing! Very easy to use and sprays great. Having the right tools sure does make the job easier.

Got my graphics laid out "again." LOL....

The lines on the yellow tape are to guide me on where to spray my coats of red. I need to expand my pattern with every coat. The main issues here is to cover the black.
20211205_103802.jpg

Here it is after all my coats over the black. I think it took 4 coats to cover. Looking good and has great coverage over the black. Time to expand with thinned out base coat.
20211205_115049.jpg

Here you can see my work area and where it is covered with full base coat. Now I will need to thin out the base coat and then expand my spray area again. If you look at the QTR you can see my 800 grit scratch marks in the QTR. Areas where I painted you cannot see the 800 grit scratch marks.
20211205_115102.jpg

Here is the QTR after I expanded my work area with thinned out base coat. You can still see a few 800 grit scratch marks at the back of the QTR. This is no problem. The clear will finish this off nicely.....
20211205_121915.jpg

Here my graphics are unmasked and the new white foam tape has been applied in preparation of the clear coat.
20211205_133946.jpg

The QTR looks GREAT! Problem is the last time I did this it was the clear coat I screwed up LOL. Let's see if I can get it right this time......

And here is the clear coat.

All I can say is WOW!!!! Love the results. This is going to look great after cut and buff.
20211205_151315.jpg

Look at that gloss. Love fresh clear coat (when it's sprayed right LMAO).
20211205_151338.jpg

I feel like I was able to get better coverage on my rocker panel this time. Last time I put so much clear at the back of the rocker I was nervous spraying material at the front.
20211205_151348.jpg

It has orange peel, as all paint jobs do, but it laid down smoother with my new gun than it did with my old one. Should make it easier to sand this panel now. That line on the QTR is from the sun. You'll see a close up later in this post.
20211205_151436.jpg

Again, look at the reflection. You can clearly see my box fans, open garage door and the stuff on my garage wall. I'll let it dry a few hours and then I'll unmask it.
20211205_151501.jpg

Here is my repair area. No runs and no solvent pop. SWEET! Very happy with the results.
20211205_151528.jpg

Another picture of my repair area. I'm starting to get pretty good at this. I talked to my brother today and he wants me to help him repaint his 68 Camaro. I told him if he is willing to do the sanding, I'm willing to spray LOL....
20211205_151532.jpg

As mentioned above, the sun was shinning through a space between my garage door. It was hitting the paint just right. I think this thing is going to look great in the sun. Again, that's the sun hitting the paint, not a flash from my phone.

And just like that, the clear has been sprayed. LOL. Wow, it looks awesome. Really awesome! I smell a side business brewing. ;)

Thank you Bob! I'm very happy with the results this time around LOL.

I'm not sure if I want to do this as a side business. It's a lot of work and when it comes to paint and body customers are VERY picky. Not sure I want to deal with people like me LMAO!!!

I think I may go back to painting diecast 03 Cobra's for SVTP members once my 65 is completed. That was fun and a lot of SVTP members were very appreciative.

A business is a lot more enjoyable when people like what you are doing :D... Also, painting diecast cars I can do for folks around the country. Painting cars I can only do for folks local to me.

Seeing your work Glenn, and how meticulous you are, I'd bet people would trailer their cars to you for a repaint. I know if I needed a repaint on my 10th I'd have no hesitancy of contacting you eventhough you're in Texas. I'd 100% trust my car with you.

Thank you Chris! Wow, that's an awesome compliment.

This is what I'm talking about when I talk about SVTP members. Even when I was painting diecast cars. There were some issues sometimes (just like with my 65 build), but no one was ever an A hole or D head about it. They were very gracious and we worked it out and I got their diecast fixed.

That's the kind of customers I like LOL. Granted there is a huge difference between a diecast car and their SVT performance vehicle LOL. However, it's nice to know you would leave your Cobra in my care.

It's funny you and Bob talk about this. My wife is pushing me to build a shop in the back. I told her I don't know if I want to do this. She said "You're always doing something. You need a shop. If not for side projects, for yourself." SWEET! I like that attitude (y)...

Man, I wouldn't mind taking my 65 to this show one year. It's in Dallas and is inside. It's not very big, but there are some badass cars. Really nice Mustang's too.

What do you guys think? Could I hang or am I out of my league/dreaming??? LMAO!!
