They pay a 3rd party appraiser to value the sculpture at $500k, "donate" it to a museum and write off the $500k.

If I ran Candid Camera:

Ha, what the buyer doesn't know is: we swiped his invisible statue and replaced it with one made of depleted uranium! Not many people know that if you blast depleted uranium with a 2.5-petahertz hypersonic frequency, it turns invisible and emits all sorts of gamma radiation. Let's see how long it takes them to notice the difference!
