how much of a pain in the ass is this really, on jack stands? I do have a HF trans jack as well.

I need to re-seal the shifter assembly on my magnum so really I only need to drop it from my scatter shield bell housing, no clutch work or anything (RXT, TOB, pilot bearing etc have maybe 5k on em).

Getting to that point in my life I dont really wanna wrestle with a transmission on my back. the other option is drive to a shop I know about an hour away and spend $200 for them to R&R it then drive an hour back.

In my experience the magnum on the HF jack is just taller than the max height of my lifting jack. Have to slide it under on cardboard and muscle it up onto the transmission jack in the tunnel. Make sure you have a good since jack and stands.

Individual results may vary depending on your other equipment. It's not too bad but depending on your exhaust it can be a bit of a pain. Driveshaft bolts are kind of a pain too. For what is 2 hours worth of labor cost it'd go that route. Just my $.02.

When my brother and I removed my t56 to change out the clutch I remember it was pretty easy. But I didn't do much, my brother did most of it. But even he said it was easier than he thought it was going to be. We did have a trans jack, but it was done on our backs with the car on jack stands.

You can do that in the car.

Just remove the h pipe and trans cross member and you do it from the top.

Im gonna take it to my buddy's place. For ~$200 he'll R&R the trans. While we're at it gonna see if we can twist my exhaust around and gain a little ground clearance. To me it's worth the $200 not to do this shit on my back on jack stands

Am I missing something here? Can’t you just do it from inside the car? Take off the shifter boot, take off the shifter, apply sealant and put it back together? Is a magnum different than a regular t-56 in this regard?

the magnum T56 shifter is much bigger - its 6 bolts vs 4. Once installed you cant even reach the front 2 bolts to snug them down. Hell, we used bolts with lower profile heads than what came with the shifter to keep it from hitting the trans tunnel. You'd have to cut out a pretty good chunk of the trans tunnel to be able to remove/install the shifter inside the car

Haha so yes, I was missing something. I just looked at Tremecs website and I did notice that. Thank you for the reply and I’m glad I learned something new.
A new T-56 magnum will hopefully find its way into my trans tunnel this summer, if OT at work is good.

Installing a Magnum isn't real fun even with a transmission jack, the shifter stub makes it a total pain in the ass. I'd really hate to do one without the proper equipment.

You can do it in the car.

I just did it 6 months ago.

Front two bolts have to be done with a wrench a quarter then at a time but it isn’t bad.

Wasting time pulling the trans.

I went back over your previous post but need some clarity here - so if I remove the mid pipe and trans cross brace then what - I can use a jack under the trans and lower it down just enough to unbolt the shifter and then pull the whole assembly up through the trans tunnel? The motor and trans will move that much on the engine mounts?

if you have a pivoting head ratcheting wrench will it work?

Correct.

I use a wrench to get the front two bolts. Only get 1/4-1/3 of a turn at a time but oh well.

Use a 1/4 drive wobbly on the other 4.

Nice thin film of ultra black on both the trans and shifter base

Remember to order a new seal for the shifter. Common failure. It’s usually not the base to trans leaking.
