I'm sure you'll have a crowd around it most of the day.

That would be cool Bob. That stack injection does draw people in. The car is not even finished right now and those who have seen it just want to look at the stack injection system LOL.

I'm really looking forward to this year's show. Hoping everything works out (i.e. they actually have MBTB this year AND I actually finish the car LOL).

Glad you got the paint situation fixed, that could’ve been a bad deal!
I just love the lines of the classic Mustangs, and it should look even better in that classy Laser a Red.
Looking forward to seeing it painted and in the sun!

Thank you J. Yes sir, I do realize the paint situation could have been a disaster LOL. Yes, I'm very excited about getting the engine bay painted. I have done a lot of body work this week and even in primer it looks really straight. Can't wait to see it in paint and clear coated.....

Sorry everyone.... Yesterday was a very cold day here. So, my glazing putty and painting would not have come out right. So, there are no updates today because I didn't do any body work yesterday.

Hopefully, my body guy comes over tomorrow and can get me into paint this weekend. You will know on Monday how things go this weekend LOL.

Okay everyone....

Here we go................. It was the best weekend of this build to date. EVERYTHING worked out exactly as I had hoped.

So, on Friday I left work early and got to work on the firewall. I needed to get it done so the entire engine bay would be prepped and ready for whatever my body guy would need to do as it would be back to a base primer coat.

Here is the firewall after initial blocking. I'm not focusing too much on the trans tunnel as you will not really see it.
20210430_142054_resized.jpg

Here I added the glazing putty.
20210430_144709_resized.jpg

I even put some glazing putty on the bottom to even it up a little.
20210430_144720_resized.jpg

Here it is after final sanding.
20210430_161723_resized.jpg

Even the bottom looks decent.
20210430_161736_resized.jpg

Okay, had to spray etching primer where I went to bare metal.
20210430_162515_resized.jpg

And here it is back in 2K primer. Man it looks straight :D.
20210430_165215_resized.jpg

In these photos you will notice a slight space between the metal where the firewall meets the fender aprons. This area is not seam welded from the factory and I did not body work it as it will flex and crack. I'll explain what my body guy did to make this look better a little later.
20210430_165237_resized.jpg

Space is even more prominent on the passenger side. But other than that I think it looks great.

Okay, On Saturday my body guy got there bright and early and told me that all the work I did during the week put us ahead of schedule. Remember I had said it would take us 3 Saturday's to do this? Well, the work I did made up for one of the Saturdays.

So, my body guy asked me to point out all the spots I missed and he fixed them. Then I unwrapped the car to take off all the old plastic that had body filler and primer dust on them. Had to put new plastic and re-tape areas to get it ready for paint. While I was doing that my body guy was sanding the engine bay with 400 grit. Then we cleaned everything up and got ready to spray.

Holy _ _ _ _!!!! I can't believe this is going to happen LOL......

Okay, car all taped up and engine bay cleaned. My body guy decided to hit the top of the cowl with 1000 grit and we are going to respray it is it did look a "little" dry from the previous paint job. However, we need to build up the color in the engine bay first. When we give the engine bay its final coat we will spray the cowl at that time.

In this picture you can see the A-pillar is also exposed. We are going to blend into this area on both sides.
20210501_131526_resized.jpg

Okay, since these are my materials and I'm familiar with them (from spraying the diecast Terminators) I did all the mixing and prep work. Then I handed the gun to my body guy and we went to town. Even I got to spray on this. So, I did do spraying too LOL.

Here we go (Notice the cowl is covered). Color being laid down. SWEET! I officially started this project on May 26, 2020 and color went down on May 1, 2021.
20210501_133911_resized.jpg

Here she is after 2 coats of paint. Time to unwrap the cowl and shoot the final coat of color.

20210501_144955_resized.jpg

Here the cowl is uncovered and the third coat of paint has been applied.
20210501_152415_resized.jpg

Man, the color is a perfect match to the car. I'm so stoked....

Gentlemen, we have reach the top of the summit on this project.

Words cannot express how happy I am with the results. This turned out AMAZING in my opinion. This makes all those hours of metal work, fabricating, body work and sanding SO worth it!!!!!

Yes, there is some trash in the paint. But, remember this was done in my garage, not a paint booth. I did put plastic around the walls, wet the floor and I used 3 box fans as exhaust fans to pull the fumes and dust in the air out. I think it came out great considering the environment.

Next will be wet sanding and buffing.

HELL YES!!!! I can't take my eyes off it LMAO.
20210501_163633_resized.jpg

Here you can see some orange peel in the firewall reflection. Also, you can see the firewall and fender apron areas I mentioned earlier. My body guy brought over some seam sealer and put it in these areas. It really filled the gaps nicely and will remain flexible so it will not crack.
20210501_163828_resized.jpg

Making sure all areas have coverage.
20210501_163730_resized.jpg

Again, you can see orange peel in the panel. This will all be taken care of in the buffing process.
20210501_163655_resized.jpg

I clear coated the cowl and tops of the fender apron areas. So, again, I do have some spray work invested into this LOL.
20210501_163646_resized.jpg

Think I did pretty good on the cowl :D.
20210501_163721_resized.jpg

Man, I still can't believe how good this looks.
20210501_163949_resized.jpg

The area in white will be hit with Raptor liner.
20210501_164648_resized.jpg

Here you can see the A-pillar. Bottom is new paint/clear and top is old. Believe me, you cannot see a difference even looking at it with my eye and with sunlight on it. Once I sand and buff this you'll never know.
20210501_163755_resized.jpg

Here you can seen the blending into the rocker panel. This will be worked a little more once I have my fenders on and have the G.T. 347 removed and the G.T. 427 added, but it looks great so far.

Holy crap that’s a LOT of work out into this! The results are showing it too. It looks amazing! Having a buffed and polished bay plus the shiny 427 in there will be worth it. You get a golf clap for this and with the timeline you got it done in

That looks great. Good work. You would win a trophy if I was the judge. Can’t wait to see more.

Thank you geoffmt! Yeah, there were times when I walked up to the car and said to myself "I really don't feel like sanding today" LOL. But looking at it now I'm glad I stuck with it and didn't take any short cuts. I know it's not perfect and if you look really hard you'll see some mistakes, but I did my best and I'm VERY happy with it.

Thank you for the golf clap and kudos brother! Appreciate you keeping up with my thread/build since the beginning.

Thank you Todd! I'm not a trophy junkie, but it is really nice when others recognize your efforts. I know not everyone will like it, and I'm okay with that, but hopefully those that don't like it at least recognize the time, effort and passion that went into this build.

Yes sir, I need to get this finished up by September. So, I'll continue to post up every Monday with my progress.

That came out great, the time you spent on it shows.

Thank you Grabber. Really appreciate you always providing feedback my friend!

Pretty impressive to knock out in a year, especially learning what you’re doing as you went. Good work man

Thank you DSG. Yeah, it has been an experience to say the least. I grabbed a T shirt out of my closet the other day and it was full of pin holes from burn through marks. When I first started I was welding in my T shirt rather than leather protective sleeves. I learned my lesson after I got burnt a couple of times and bought some sleeves and proper welding gloves instead of using my mechanics gloves LMAO!!! The things we do when we don't know what we are doing LOL.

Hey, they tell us not to touch the stove because it's hot, but do we listen? Well, I didn't LOL.

VERY nice! Huge congrats.-J

Thank you J. Really appreciate you posting up brother!

Okay everyone,

I cannot believe how things keep falling into place for me on this build. Yes, I have had some minor set backs, but nothing major. Well, yesterday I got lucky and figured out the last piece of the puzzle for my build.

As you know my theme is G.T. 427. I have been trying to figure out how I was going to get the graphic to change the side stripe from G.T. 347 to G.T. 427. My original graphics place had went out of business (that happens a lot here in El Paso to small business owners for some reason). So, during my lunch I did a search and found some places, but a lot of them are sign places, not vinyl graphics places. So, I decided to call a place that sounded like a possibility. Bingo! The guy says he makes custom vinyl graphics and said he could make my stencils. And the kicker is he is located literally a half a mile from my office LOL.

This is what I got.

I only need 2, but got 4 in case I screw something up LOL.

Perfect fit. Man, that's going to look good in black on the fender.

The font even matches my Speedhut gauges.

Also, my mini polisher arrived in the mail yesterday. So, after playing with my new graphics I went and tested it out.

WOW!!!! Is all I can say :D:eek::D.....

This was the process. I used 1000, 1500, 2000 and 3000 grit wet sanding. Then I used the 3M perfect it system consisting of a 3 step process (cutting, buffing and final polishing).

Here you can see how bad the dirt nibs are in the fender apron. I seem to have gotten dirt nibs on the horizontal areas and orange peel on the vertical panels. Oh well, nothing cutting and buffing can't fix :D.
Dirt nibs.jpg

This is after a pass with the 1000 grit wet sand. Dirt nibs are still visible. I used 1000 grit until all the dirt nibs and orange peel were out. Then I finished the panel off with 1500, 2000 and 3000. After the 1000 gets everything out and the panel is even/flat the other 3 grits go pretty fast.
20210504_185052_resized.jpg

More dirt nibs and orange peel being worked out.
20210504_185103_resized.jpg

This is after I'm done with 1000 grit
20210504_181341_resized.jpg

This is after all the sanding is complete. Not much difference from the 1000, but the micro scratches are worked out a little more in this process.
20210504_181352_resized.jpg

This is after the 3M stage 1. I am familiar with this process as I use the 3M perfect it kit when polishing the Terminator diecasts I build.
20210504_184223_resized.jpg

After 3M stage 2.
20210504_192631_resized.jpg

And this is after 3M stage 3. You can clearly see my garage door opener and the light.
20210504_192649_resized.jpg

This is still stage 3, but I lowered the camera angle so you could even see the sheet of plastic I have hanging up. You can clearly see the lines/wrinkles in the plastic sheet. Holy crap this engine bay is going to look amazing once I get it all polished. That is.... after sanding the entire engine bay 4 times (1000, 1500, 2000 and 3000) and polishing it 3 times (3M 3 stage process) LOL.......... Oh well, it's just manual labor LOL.
