Have you tried running 5W30 instead of 5W20. The earlier 4Vs used 5W30. Ford changed to 5W20 later to comply with CAFE standards: not because it was better for your engine. I have run 5W30 in mine almost since the beginning (original owner) and have never had a lubrication issue. All of my original bearings and cam journals looked great when I had it apart at 40K miles.

Do you have any information on your oil pressure at idle and higher RPM where it goes away? That might help point you in one direction or another.

222 is boiling. 228 I shut mine down

235 lucky you didn’t blow coolant

212 deg F is boiling for 100% water at standard atmospheric pressure
225 deg F is boiling for 50/50 coolant at standard atmospheric pressure (no pressure cap)
245 deg F is boiling for 50/50 coolant with an 8psi pressure cap
265 deg F is boiling for 50/50 coolant with a 15psi pressure cap

235 deg F isn't unheard of on a totally stock system. Ford liked to run these things hot, presumably for emissions. I'm not a big fan (no pun) but that's another discussion altogether...

I’m actually running 5w30 now. I’ve also tried the motorcraft 5w20 synthetic blend as well as castrol edge 5w50. All of them tick. No oil pressure info. If it was a oil pressure issue how do you explain the tick going away temporarily when doing the lifter bleed procedure, and only returning once the car cools off?

What exactly are you doing for your lifter bleed procedure?

And I thought you said that it's fine cold, but ticks when warmed up?

Either way, considering oil pressure is a big variable for both the timing system and valvetrain, which can both cause ticking, and it also correlates with temperature, the same as your symptoms, it's a place to start. If the numbers look good, it's at least something you can rule out. Tracking down an issue isn't just finding out what it is, part of it is determining what it isn't.

Let the car warm up to normal operating temp by idling, drive 10 miles to get car even warmer, stop and rev/hold engine at 3500 rpm for 4-5 minutes until coolant temps hit 235. Let engine cool back off to normal operating temp just idling. Repeat the process a few times. It is fine when cold (while warming up to normal op temp just by idling), but not fine at operating temp (after driving 10 miles), but fine at 235 (after holding rpms for 3-4 minutes at 3500), but then not fine once it cools back down to 210 just idling.

That sounds like a horrible procedure. Get a cheap pressure gauge from a parts place and log the oil pressure, engine temp, RPM, etc when the you hear the tick.

As RPM up so does oil pressure. You'll also see the highest oil pressure at cold start.

Grab a mechanics stethoscope and probe the bolts on the valve cover. The lash adjusters are easily heard when they are going bad. I have had this issue for years here in SoCal when it gets over 95 out. First started when switching to RP and is worse on those type brands. Doesn’t do it on Mobil 1 10w-30 unless it’s 95+.
If it’s a lash adjuster you will pinpoint it with one of those bolts. If not you have to search elsewhere.

I had never heard of it. Interesting oil additive. What made you try it? Recommendation?

Thanks for the reply. The video adds to the info I gleaned this morning with Google. ;) The before and after is AMAZING!

Holy shit, that's pretty crazy that stuff stopped that noise, I'm assuming it's just recommend every oil change?

I heard of these tick issues, but always thought these motors where just noisy, mine has always sounded kind of clanky. I don't believe much in miracle fluids but this sounds impressive.

It does. If I didn't actually see the video, I would have trouble believing it actually worked!

I remember when the Coyotes first came out they seemed to be plagued with a ticking noise. One guy was there when an engineer showed up and poured something into his engine. Obviously the engineer didn't say what it was. But apparently it quieted the engine down almost immediately. I don't know what the long term results were. That's what I'm curious about with this stuff. How long will it last versus what they say?
