4.6 rebuild

Long story short I have a friend that’s giving me a 4.6 2V. The motor has a knock.

I have been inspired by other members here to explore the mechanic side of my 03 GT.

My plan is to forged this motor and drop it into my stang.

With the motor having that issue, I want to tear the block right down, are they any reasons I should do this because of the knock ? If so why ?

I don’t care about the budget build here, this is for my enjoyment and my own experience.

Now I need an end goal here. My current car has a V2 VORTECH si supercharger in it. So in my head I would like to turn up the boost on this car and hit anywhere between 6-700HP. That being said I need direction as to which parts I should shoot for.

Do I need to machine the block ? That sort of thing, any sort of encouragement and hell is greatly appreciated. This will be a Year long build and I’m in no hurry to get it done. Just need a plan of action.

Tear it all down and inspect it. Then have a professional machine shop inspect it. Tbeyll be able to give you an idea of what all is gonna need done. Might need machine work on the crank might not. Might need bored and might not. A quality machine shop can point you in the right direction.

My end goal is to have the whole motor forged, so crank would be useless no ?

I've seen some guys make 600 on cast cranks. But forged would definitely bring some more piece of mind.

Since you're looking into a new rotating assembly I'd consider a stroker set up. It'll come with a new crank, rods, and pistons.

I think I was talking to you in a different post a few days back.

Anyways is there a specific striker kit you’d recommend ?

I’m not a big fan of any of the off the shelf 4.6 stroker kits.

For a decent power street car that would see some mileage I would run a Stock stroke Cobra crank, Manley rods, decent off the shelf piston of your choice, moly rings and trend wrist pins if you plan on bigger boost numbers.

My goal is 600+ RWHP. Would you go H beam or I beam ? And should I replace all the supporting things like guides and chains.

Modmax used to have something decent. Along with MMR. I know my past posts show I'm anti MMR, but their parts are usually decent.

I think you mentioned your an electrician I think ? I want to do this motor mostly myself. I’m going to bring it to a machine shop. Was thinking to go a .20 over bore

I’m the electrician. Don’t jump into .020 automatically. See what the block is at for taper, egging, wear then talk to piston manufactures. Most will accommodate some custom diameters. Let the machine shop do what it needs to clean up the cylinders.

Electronic tech. Calibration tech if you want to be more technical.

That's how I did mine. Local machine shop did the machining and I put it all together. I would see what the machine shop says. The less amount of material removed the better.

I appreciate the input guys. The engine that I’m using is actually the original engine that came from my car. It’s a 4.6 2v Romeo block

So I will take the suggestions, I’ll tear the motor down to the block and go see the machine shop, see what they say then start my build from there.

Yes not sure if it’s still available but the ModMax was a quality 4340 piece. MMR had 2 different stroker cranks. One was a 4340 and the second was a coyote crank with some mods done to make it work inside a 4.6. I’d lean toward the ModMax if I were forced to go that route. MMR I don’t trust for reasons that anyone is welcome to PM me about.

So you’d go with the 4340 crank ?

And with this engine build the plan is to drop in a T56 support the power, does it matter if I use a 6 bolt or an 8bolt flywheel ?

You need whatever one matches up with your crank
