I know a couple of similar stories. Worked with a guy, bought his daughter a new Subaru, sent her to college.
A year later, the engine locked up. No oil, never checked, added or changed.
Second story, friends custom van, oil light came on.
Upon removing drain plug, a slug of oil came out and then retracted back into the pan. The oil was like jello.
New oil and filter and good for another 10 years of no service. He did keep his rides shiny on the outside.

I've heard similar oil change (or lack thereof) stories over the years. One person said to me once, "I thought I changed the oil when the oil light comes on.":eek:

They aren’t wrong... it’s just that there are better times.

When I was a nooblet working on the lube rack at a Honda dealer, I did an oil change on a Civc. Quite literally a half quart of black, sludgy oil came out when I removed the drain plug.

I rushed to the service advisor to tell him He said "Unless there is a major engine noise or the oil light stays on, dump oil in it and ship into wash."

I shit you not, I put oil back in it, fired it up and that little Honda ran like it never had an oil issue.

I was impressed to say the least.
