The garage looks empty LOL.

Got the car inside the shop. We left it on the trailer as it did not need to be removed to complete the work.
20210327_124653_resized_1.jpg

Grinding away all my nice bodywork (LOL) to expose the bare metal.
20210327_131153_resized_1.jpg

Mocking everything up to get it in place. We put the header back in to make sure everything cleared before doing the final welding.
20210327_152401_resized_1.jpg

My fabricator indicated to me that he felt the frame metal was too thin. So, he made a plate and then welded the heim joint bung to the plate and then the plate to the frame. He said he could not get a good angle to weld along the side of the plate. So, he told me once I remove the engine he will come to my house and use my welder to weld along the side of the plate just to finish it off. He believes it will hold as is, but just wants to finish it up.
20210327_153842_resized_1.jpg

And here it is all finished up. The steering is solid and turns smoothly and effortlessly. Awesome!!! By the way the hole on the firewall is where my throttle cable goes. Yes, the body work is cracked. That happened when I was pushing on the firewall for something. My body guy already told me he will help me get it sorted out. Once the throttle cable is bolted back in it will reinforce that area.

Then on Sunday I was just going to pull the driveshaft and transmission. However, once I got those items out I realized it wouldn't take much to get the engine out. So, I removed the engine as well.

I didn't take pictures because you guys have already seen the engine out and being installed. However, I did snap this photo that shows the engine out and the steering shaft in. Not that you guys don't believe me, but just to show the engine and transmission are indeed out of the car now.

Next week, I'll remove the suspension and remaining items in order to get the body work completed on the engine bay and to get it painted some time in April.

Oh, I also turned in my bell housing and oil pan and those items on the fender apron to my powder coater yesterday. Should get those back this week. SWEET!!!

I love progress!!!

One more item off the checklist. Definitely a good looking job he did on it. Digging that Comet and Shelby clone. Isn't that what a living room is supposed to look like? LOL.

Wow! Yeah, I can now TOTALLY understand why you're using this fabricator. Those are some nice cars at his shop. I especially like the work done on the Mercury Comet.

Okay all,

My powder coater works fast. Wish everyone worked like this LOL. I turned my parts in Sunday afternoon and they were ready yesterday afternoon. Sweet!

All my items.
20210329_190156_resized.jpg

Got my speaker grill in flat black.
20210329_190106_resized.jpg

I had him clean up my steering shaft coupler. It was all burnt up from the welding process. After he cleaned it he powder coated it in clear. The brackets hold my radiator to the support.
20210329_190136_resized.jpg

He cleaned up some casting marks and got my bell housing looking great.

Going to look great behind the engine next to the firewall :D.
20210329_190127_resized.jpg

He got the oil pan looking great too.

Hello all,

Some of you may recall that I purchased a MC cover that had fins and was similar to my valve covers. Some of you may also recall that the MC cover was polished and the valve covers had black valley's and polished peaks on the fins.

I was asked at that time, by the SVTP members following this thread, if I was going to have the MC cover match my valve covers. I replied I didn't know.

Well............

When I took my car to the fabricator's shop he was working directly over the MC cover. He looked at the valve covers and the VERY first thing he asked me was "Are you going to make the MC cover match the valve covers?" LMAO... Car guys, right????
20210327_152401_resized_1.jpg

So..........

The other day when I picked up my items from the powder coater I took the MC cover and asked the powder coater what he could do. He said to leave it and he would figure it out.

He called me yesterday and said the MC cover was done. I was surprised as he did not tell me he could do it or not.

AND here is the kicker. When I asked him how much I owed him, he said it was on the house. WHAT? That was awesome! I guess I have been bringing him enough items he did me a favor. This dude is great!

This is what he did. SWEET!!!!! Things just keep falling into place. I love it! :D:D:D

Plus you're going to be advertising for him. So it's good to keep the customers happy.

It's funny you mention that Bob. My fabricator uses my powder coater too. My powder coater was mentioning that he gets calls and he asks them how they heard of him (My powder coater is retired and basically does this out of his shop behind his house). They say the fabricator referred them to him. I guess word of mouth is a big factor and can benefit or hinder your business LOL.

Well the powder coater's business is going to benefit from my word of mouth once my car is completed and I take it around town :).

Okay all,

Minor update. I just got off the phone with my brother's body shop guy. I'm coordinating with him to get the engine bay completed. This coming up weekend is Easter and the following weekend he already has a commitment.

So, as of now we plan on starting the final steps to get the engine bay painted on 17 April.

Between now and then I need to remove the rest of the suspension components and get the engine bay stripped down to nothing. Also, I want to install some panels on the front of the car (i.e. a grill and radiator cover) to clean it up. So, I will need to get the radiator support set up to receive these panels. So, I will need to drill some holes and weld some nuts on before we finish up the body work on the engine bay.

So, these will be my projects for the next few weekends. Also, my fabricator said he would swing by after work one day next week to finish welding in the steering heim joint plate to the frame.

Stay tuned...........

Okay everyone,

It was a slow weekend. I only worked on the car on Saturday due to Sunday being Easter. Feel like I got a decent amount done though.

I finished disassembling the parts in the engine bay. I have officially determined two things. First, going backwards sucks LOL and second, it is much easier to disassemble than it is to assemble........ Man, does this scene look familiar LOL.

The good news is the engine bay is ready for final body work and the start of the paint process.

I also had to remove the steering column and the brake pedal system as these items have some form of attachment to the engine bay.

20210403_095811_resized.jpg

Got the steering column, pedals and driver's seat removed.
20210403_125842_resized.jpg

Okay, I had painters tape and electrical tape wrapped around the column when I had my tach clamped to it. Taking all that apart and removing and reinstalling the column itself, my clutch and brake pedals, my clutch master cylinder took its toll on my column. Here you can see it is scratched to hell.
20210403_153843_resized.jpg

Time to take it to my powder coater and let him work his magic.
20210403_153849_resized.jpg

Turned my column in to the powder coater Saturday morning. He called me Saturday night and said I could come pick it up. I love this guy!!!

Once the engine bay is painted will things be going back together for good?

Hello Bob! Yes sir. Once the engine bay is painted I'm going to focus on the engine. I need to paint the block and then start final assembly. I need to install the oil pump, pilot bearing and then put the parts on "WITH" the gaskets installed this time. Then I'll get the engine and transmission installed for the final time and then run the wiring and then finalize everything and see if I can get her to fire up LOL.

So, still a long ways to go brother.

So I see disassemble for paint as a step forward that does look like going backwards. But still a forward step! Your powdercoat guy is awesome, great quick fix with no loss of time! I love seeing the progress, being laid up I wish for the energy and motivation for projects. Maybe that will be better next month. Thanks for sticking with it, you are getting so close!
