Here’s a first look at the ’22 Subaru WRX testing near Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Subaru used the 2017 Tokyo Motor Show to unveil its Viziv Performance Concept, which offered a glimpse at the next-generation WRX models due for the ’22 model year. A couple of months later at the 2018 Tokyo Auto Saloon, the Viziv Performance STi concept was revealed. The prototype seen here appears to draw a lot of styling influence from that concept. Autocar spoke to Subaru Design chief Mamoru Ishii where he stated “Such a car [the concept] brings lots of expectation, from within the company and from our customers. What we know is that our customers’ lifestyles are changing and we have to respond to that.”

Rumors have been circulating about a replacement turbocharged 2.4L four-cylinder (a boxer type) referred to as the FA24, could power the next WRX STI with 400 hp and 361 lb.-ft. of torque. Currently, the FA24 2.4L turbocharged four-cylinder moves Subaru's bigger three-row Ascent. There’s zero confirmation on whether the WRX will use a similar version of that new turbocharged 2.4L, or if they’ll rely on the established 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder. Expect the next-gen WRX to offer a six-speed manual or an automatic transmission.

An official debut is expected around the second quarter of 2021.

I was thinking the same thing, BUT it camo'd and some of the expected trim, like rear spoiler, is probably purposely missing on this one.

Let me guess. It will be reliable , dependable , an excellent drive train and incredibly boring. Carry on. Will be interesting to see if they actually bring a 400HP to market.

Subaru needs to offer the Sti with 400hp and offer it with a automatic / DCT transmission. Then I'll be interested.

As much as I've never been into Subarus, I have to admit that WRXs are overall dependable and somewhat fun to drive. This "new" version will very likely be just like every previous generation.
I will say that aside from the bro/vape/Rally Armor stigma, I've never really been impressed with their quality. I mean, I get into my cousin's $36k STi, close the door, and listen to the body panels resonate. For that money, I want something that at least hides the fact that it's a tin can.
Or, skip it, get an RS, and leave Subies behind. Hurt plenty of feelings with mine.

They should. Then they can finally almost match the performance of a 2011 Mustang GT 5.0

I'll yell at my Subaru rep the next time I see him. Serious though I will be in the market for a new daily to replace my 17 Fusion sport at some point. Want something not too big, AWD, Quick, Sporty, automatic, all the latest tech, and not cost and arm and a leg. Also needs to be new so I get a tax savings. I have VW here as well so I will take a hard look at the Golf R when it comes out.

Other companies: Here's our popular model that looks like an unholy love child of the last generation and a Tesla.

Subaru: Here's the all knew WRX that looks and is built like it's still 2015.

Subaru 2030: We're proud to introduce an all new generation boxer engine.
