I have a lot of photos and I have a few family videos stored on my computer. My hard drive is about maxed out with storage and I have made copies of the videos to disc. I was looking at possibly getting an external hard drive for the storage of the pics and vids. Is this a good idea for long term storage?

Not a pro by any stretch but I recommend backing them up to 2 external hard drives. I use multiple SSD HDs, both 500 gig and 1T. They are a little pricey but I've better luck with them than with platters.

Triple physical backups and store at least one copy off site.

This .. You can get a 2TB Western Digital drive for less than 70 bucks. a 4TB for 120. They have a good warranty and last a good long while. I am still using 1 and 2 TB drives I bought while I was in Iraq.

That’s what I was thinking, two SSD’s just to free up my laptop and hopefully keep the videos and photos from getting wiped out.

Off site like a bank lock box?

I will look into those, thank you for the recommendation. I have searched Amazon and it’s pretty overwhelming to decide what is a good choice.

That works. Pretty much anything that would be safe from a natural disaster or fire that would take out your main home.

This is a 2 TB SanDisk SSD drive with usb-C.

Size of a credit card, bout 1/4 inch thick.

I do high-end video rendering and production and this thing is fantastic!

Take a look at NAS devices then keep a copy off site somewhere. That reminds me I need to go through my photo backups.

Not sure if you're a fan of cloud backing or not. I use backblaze to back up all my stuff outside of my PC and external HDD's. Pretty simple to use, have not had any issue's with it so far.

I gave into the dark side, and embraced the cloud (I use one drive). The storage and the advantage of having full access to all files over different devices, has made my life much easier.

I was actually looking at that one on Amazon and people complained that the transfer speed was slow. Not sure how true that is.

I’ll look into that as well, thanks.

I am not comfortable using the cloud, I don’t want anyone getting a hold of my pics and vids.

.

Not slow at all. Not even close. Make sure it's SSD and usb-c. Those are not slow. At least for what I do. I have some externals that are slow. This is lightning fast compared.

It's speed compliments my i9 HP Omen

What's the lifespan on magnetically charged 1's and 0's? I thought I read somewhere, 15 years or so, and you should "re-encode/rewrite" files every 10 years?

Offsite could be a friend/family member, as long as you don't care if they snoop lol.
