How many on here keep something big kind of in the way just because it's sentimental?
Perhaps something you've inherited or were given by family.
Do you ever feel forced to keep it?

If you got rid of it, did you regret it?

I keep sentimental things. Probably because I lost my dad at 17 and the fear of losing a connection...well scares me. I’m slowly coming to the realization that I do need to get rid of some shit.

edit: I do feel somewhat forced to keep things by my mom. She has drawings and schoolwork from when my sister and I were young and she has tried to give it (mine) to me several times. I told here to throw it away, but she won’t. Just keeps trying to get me to take it.

While not the same I do feel like some of that is easier these days - high quality scan saved to a safe backup and somewhere and then keeping the originals isn't so important. Smaller things I've kept but bigger things that are constantly in the way not so much. I have offered those things to other family/friends and they've been glad to have some of it.

I think part of it is I am have no family to unload it on.

Parents dead
Grandparents dead
Only child
One cousin that's close. But she's a disaster.

ya, that makes it different, meanwhile my parents and one grandparent are still alive so haven't had anything really dropped on me.

My dad gave me all his fishing gear when he moved into a home. Most of it is old and some is even rotten and just is not something I would even ever use to fish with, but he was always just proud and mighty of his aquired collection of lures and rods etc.... That it is an honor for me to have it now....

It takes up massive space and I would love to get rid of it but just can't because I know how much it would hurt him. I also had this situation with an old chevy truck he gave me years ago.

When he passes on I don't know what will happen with it all, but I definitely understand the sentimental attachment.

I am sure when I am gone my kid will have the same issue with my old vintage flashlight collection, or maybe all my car parts I have stashed away...

I'm currently going through all my Dads stuff now. I actually started a thread about it like couple days ago. I'm keeping the real sentimental stuff (mostly small stuff though).
