Since there was an lighting thread I thought I would ask about garage heat. This year I bought a "the hot one" cadet heater on clearance. It's is the 5000 watt model. And I use an extension cord to move it around to where I am working. (It's 240 30 amp plug in)

I was hoping it would be better and easier to use than the old kerosene ones I have used in the past. (I don't know how or when kerosene became so damn expensive as it use to cost about in line with gasoline prices but now it's about $8-$10 a gallon)

So far I'm not very impressed with the "hot one". It needs to be running for a long time before things warm up in the garage. (40+ min) Where as the kerosene heaters always warmed things up quick. (Pic of my 2 kerosene heaters on here to show what I was using)

My garage is pretty large (1000sq ft 4 car with 10 ft ceilings), and is mildly insulated.

I am thinking to get a wall mount type or still something Electric as I have a 50 amp service for a welder that I can plug into.

What do you guys have????View attachment 1681076

Just like the light thread, I too want to heat my garage! It's a three car garage with 10' ceilings and currently a nice and toasty 44 degrees...(30 degrees outside right now). It's fully finished, but I know for a fact the third bay ceiling isn't insulated and neither are the side walls. I will insulate the third bay ceiling because I'll be turning it into an attic, but undecided if it's worth the effort to insulate the walls. If I could keep it closer to 60 degrees inside, I'll be a happy camper.

This natural gas heater is connected to a thermostat and I have a ceiling fan which spreads the heat pretty quickly. In Winter I usually keep the garage at 50 degrees unless I’m working on a car, then I increase it to 60. One of the best features when we designed this home.

I have a mr buddy big buddy heater hooked up to a grill propane tank. I only have a two car garage and it is well insulated on all sides. It'll go from about 50 (usually coldest it gets in garage without heat) to 70 in 20-30 mins on high. I can then keep it at that temp with the heater set on low. Tank lasts a long time at that rate. Works well for me.

No wood burners yet? 40x40x12 and it heats the shop up to a perfect beer drinking temperature.

Bought it off Craigslist for $100. It had been sitting outside. I wire wheeled all the rust off, and used black stove polish to polish it up. Came out great and it is really a pretty piece. It will run you out of the garage even on the coldest days. Here it is on all its code conforming glory.

I have a 30'x30' with 12' ceilings. I insulated the ceiling with foil faced 2" foam board and use a propane 135,000 btu blower. It's loud but it gets the garage up to 65*+. Before I installed the foam board it would only get it up to the mid 50's.
I want to insulate the the walls and install 2 split systems so I have heat and A/C. Then I want to put a cot out there so I can tell the wife and kids to piss off more often and have a place to sleep.

I've been anecdotally researching heat for my 28X28' garage (13' ceilings), so this thread is interesting to me. I have pretty good insulation in the walls and ceilings. Generally, it stays 15-20 degrees above outside temperature, but that doesn't help when it's only 20 degrees outside.

My home's propane tank is buried only about 20 feet from the garage, so I might leverage that. Would love to find a wall unit that will activate the propane heat as soon as 120 volt power is applied to it. That way, I can put it on a Wemo electric outlet and turn on with a phone app from the warmth of my house a few minutes before I plan to go to the garage.

I use this for a 750sf 3 car. Leave at 55 through winter and turn up when working out there. Has a remote to it and runs on a 40 amp circuit.

Wanted gas but running the flue was going to be a pain...

Very easily done. I don’t sell wemo but I’ve set up quite a few lutron caseta controls to close relays through the app. Pool pumps, pool heaters, garage heaters. You name it.

200k BTU natural gas radiant heater. Works well in a large open space. Wish I had went with in-floor heating though.
