I am thinking of buying one (only a 5% discount right now) but I have a few questions.

I will probably install the extended handle (may order both) but want to try to use my existing stock ball. Will there be a lot of threads showing underneath the stock ball once it is mounted and what mechanism is used to keep the stock shift ball aligned? Do they provide a locking nut or does that only come with one of their custom balls?

I don't have my car here but how does the stock shifter and ball keep the ball tight? Was there a small locknut under the stock ball?

I think they do free factory installs but they never come up to the Northeast and driving to GA and back isn't worth it.

Thanks

I installed an MGW on my 2010 over the summer. The stock ball/spacer is held on with red loctite....and a lot of it. I tried everything to remove my stock ball without damaging it, ended up using channel locks and damaged it anyways. I ordered a new ball/spacer from Shelby. looks really good, color matches the car.

Thats what I was afraid of....maybe a heat gun on it for a few minutes but I will do it this winter in case it is down waiting for a new ball for a week.

Some guys had luck with a heat gun. If it doesn't work for you, there are plenty of cool shift knobs available out there. Just pay attention to the thread size on your shifter, there's a difference between the 07-09 and 10-14.
If you end up with an aftermarket ball, you'll need to get a spacer with it. That allows you to orient the ball where you want it by locking the ball against the spacer.

Was able to remove the ball using a strap wrench with a RUBBER strap, less than $ 10 @ Home Depot..

That's how I was planning on doing it...heat and Harbor Freight oil wrench strap

I just spent $$$ on the VMP HE sale, having second thoughts now about $400+ for a shifter
I have never had a 2nd shift gear grind or lockout yet and maybe I should leave it alone.
Some reviews appear to be very positive but others thought the price was too steep for the end results.

Does MGW make a handle for the 2010-2014 oem 10mm shifter ball thread? I have only seen the 12mm threaded handle on their site....I think the options were 12mmX1.25 and 12mmX1.75.....but no 10mm. As far as I know, there would be no option to install the smaller 2010-2014 10mm oem thread size ball on the MGW2 12mm stick....

Just checked the MGW website. They do offer a handle with a M10 x 1.25 thread for the '10-'14 cars. I got the M10 thread on mine hoping I could reuse my stock shift knob.

Yeh...I just watched all their videos...don't care for the new plastic ball and inserts..I want a smooth ball and they look like their textured with the flat top insert. The new balls also look like they use a hex nut to lock the ball / stem to the shift handle...I like the locking nut idea better.

So it looks like on a 2010-2014 GT500 you can order the original thread size 10x1.25 in standard or extended 1/2" length and use your own cue ball. But if you screw up taking your ball off, then you need to order the 12x1.25 handle shaft so that you can use one of their balls. They do not sell any 10x1.25 threaded balls from what I saw - either in the classic style or the newer plastic style they released.

I would like to get a classic ball in the kona blue color but don't see that as an option. They only sell black or white balls in the old style classic cue balls. I'm going to see if I can get my old cue ball off first and then order. Their 5% discount code is good to the end of the year, basically it gives you free shipping...not a great deal.

Yes, I see that now. All should be good for you.

I see what I was thinking about on their website that did not include the M10 thread, it was the alum. stems for the Gripper ball options, they only show the two M12 threads.

As was mentioned above, a rubber strap wrench usually works for oem knob removal, I have not done that myself, but I have read many threads over the years where others have used that knob removal method with success.

A few years ago when MGW had Ford and Shelby licensing they made some pretty cool toppers for the Gripper balls, they are getting a little harder to find now, a couple are shown below, one with the Spherical Gripper ball and one with the Cylindrical Gripper ball.

004.jpg

The Cylindrical Gripper on the left has the Black alum stem/insert and the Spherical Gripper on the right has the weighted polished stainless stem/insert. Because the balls have a textured surface and are not smooth and hard material, they live up to their name "Gripper". The long Cylindrical knob also allows for a hand grip similar to the Dodge/Chrysler Pistol Grip from the original muscle car era. The Spherical/round ball and stem on the right is considerably heavier than the longer Cylindrical ball w/ alum. stem on the left.

MGW has recently (about 4 months ago) added a "Cobra style" snake topper to their topper selection and it is cool, but not like the older style Cobra toppers......

^^^^Of course I grabbed one for my collection....

The shifter ball "can be" one of the focal points of the interior, and a Cobra snake in a Shelby is always cool.

MGW also made interior accents in the earlier days, below is a cool Cobra lighter that I believe was first offered for the Terminators......

Right now I just have it sitting in my power port......It looks better than a Black plastic plug.....

MGW has done a lot more than shifters and shifter balls over the years, and it is cool/quality stuff, but getting hard to find now because it has been obsolete for a number of years.

They all have a flat top due to the insert...I like the rounded top to fit my palm.....I'm going with my stock and if I screw it up then a new 12x1.25 shaft with their classic white.

Yes, the inserts are all flat on the Grippers, the ability to change (mix and match) the inserts, stems and balls is one of those features for some owners. I have a regular round shifter ball on my car now, I had it custom made by CalPony a few years ago when they were doing custom balls, I think it is a little larger than the 2" balls that are more common, but I find myself putting my hand around the side of the ball and partially on the stick itself more than over the top of the ball, so that is why I may like the Cylindrical Gripper more? I have not had my car out yet with the Cylindrical Gripper installed, so I could change my mind once I have experienced it.

Here is my current set-up with the Shelby engraved billet handle.....

^^^^^and this does have the lock nut you were talking about.

I also did a little bit of searching in Google and found a universal M12X1.25 shift ball with 3 adapters, one of which is M10X1.25. So if a 2010-2014 owner with a M10X1.25 stick wanted to install a MGW Gripper or the other MGW ball choices which are M12X1.25 and M12X1.75, one of the adapters included in the ball kit I found would put a MGW ball on a M10X1.25 stick.

Just an option for the owner who likes the MGW shifter ball options.....

Ordered a MGW Gen2 several weeks ago (I think around Xmas time). Haven't heard anything nor received it but I don't think my card was charged yet.
Do they do batch runs only every so often or is this abnormal?

Did you go back to the factory black power-port plug? I noticed in your later photo above that it show the black plug. By the way, I really like your shifter setup in that photo. And the round custom shifter knob. That knob is similar to the one I had on my old '03 Cobra.

If you are asking me about my power plug, no I still have the MGW Cobra lighter in that power port, HOWEVER, since that picture I have come across an owner who was selling a collection of MGW interior pieces for the S197, or at least the earlier cars. It includes a cup holder insert that I believe also surrounds the shifter, it is alum. and has a Cobra snake on it, he also had the actual Cobra plug for that power port, not the lighter. There were also a number of interior alum. trim pieces and he also had a license plate frame that is Black with a Cobra snake logo at the top center and the security screws that came with it from MGW, all of it is obsolete............I grabbed all of it from him, some of it I may use, the other stuff I will not....
