I bought a Shelby Super Snake hood...looking at finally installing it.

About 4 years ago I got a heck of a deal on a genuine Shelby Fiberglass Ram Air Hood. Life got busy and I had just started a pro touring build on my 70 mach 1 so the hood got tucked away for a later date. I have the Mach 1 pretty well finished up and so now I'm thinking about playing with the Shelby again. I bought the shelby heat extractor vents shortly after that so I have those but I haven't done anything regarding the wiper squirters or deciding if I want hood pins or not and what ones to use for this hood. I have the billet aluminum shelby pins on my stock hood now. Also it is a ram air hood but there are no pre drilled or cut holes above the air filter currently. I remember originally reading about that being a slight issue with getting too much air and cause maf problems if they're not right.

Should I put the thing on?

Why would you not?

Lol I don't know..when these cars were new I loved the Super Snake look. Now that it's 13 years old is it still a cool look or is it over done? Like lambo doors..so played out Lamborghini doesn't do it anymore. I do still like the look so I probably will haha!

I would contact Shelby in Vegas. I know they used to offer a wiper relocation kit. They would probably be able to answer any questions that you have on your install. Also, Robert M has posted on the Super Snake hood differences over time.

To me, the true SA, SS hood is the best one available as far as actually fitting the lines of the car and accentuate it.
Even more so than the KR & the other long list of variations.
The choice is yours.
But damn, comparing it to Lamborghini doors? Whew! Not sure what to say about that one..

Haha... well maybe that was a bad analogy. I just know I have personally painted and installed a few of these hoods and in my area it seems like it was all the rage. A lot of Shelby's and other Mustang variations running around with that style aftermarket hood.

Thanks for the reminder! I just ordered one from them online. Luckily they still have them in the outlet. I think Robert had some info for me when I posted I bought one 4 years ago.

OMG is that a great looking hood. It really makes the GT-500 look so much more muscular. I really like it!

Does anyone have a recommendation on wether or not I should make the Ram Air portion of the hood functional and if so how I should do it for the best results?

If you don’t have much performance mods then forget the Ram Air. I think it helps but from my memory there’s a fair amount involved to make it functional.
As far as install, my favorite ‘07-09 cars by far are the SS models and the hood is a huge part of that.
For a cool effect, use the 2020 GT500 style hood pins. The ones ford uses are actually aftermarket called Quic Latch I believe? Ford did come up with a cool self centering closure that would be awesome to use on any hood.
Good luck.

Here are my mods:
FRPP Forged Shortblock 2.3L FRPP TVS 2.6 Pulley, 10% ATI Balancer, ID1000's, DW300M Fuel Pumps, VMP DUAL BAP's, FORE Fuel Rails, JLT 123mm CAI, VMP Twin 67mm TB, Dynatech Long Tubes, O/X Pipe, FRPP SVT1 Axle Back, VMP E85 Tune, C&R Heat Exchanger with dual fans
Griggs Racing Suspension with Watts link, Torque Arm, Koni Coil Overs, DSS one piece Drive Shaft, CHE Safety loop
Mcleoud RXT Clutch, Ford Racing Short Throw Shifter
Tune on 20* Timming...704WHP 658 WTQ

I thought about the quick latches but read they don't work very well with fiberglass hoods and a lot of guys had spider cracks from using them.

Lots of guys reported issues with the earlier Ram Air setup. Too much air "blowing the candle out".
There is a solution, I just don't recall the details.

Good mods although low timing on E85 is giving up free torque for sure.
Not sure I buy that those pins automatically will cause that, as I’d expect a quality body shop could take precautions and make it work.
Let us know when you get it on, it is definitely worth the effort to transform the car.

I test fit the hood this afternoon and got the holes for the hood pins located. Hood fits ok but its a little tight on the wiper cowl and a little high on the fender on the drivers side. I took the gas struts off the hinges and it fit better on the fender but still a little high. I'm not sure what # rating the struts are but they hold the hood up well and doesn't seam to take too much effort to get the hood to close but it definitely bows the side slightly, at least the drivers side.

The SS hood is my favorite, on all years.

I don't have one, but I keep good company.

Sent from my SM-G975U using the svtperformance.com mobile app

I do like the super snake hood a lot and will say it's probably my favorite look. I just always try to stand out in the crowd with my cars. From what I have come to learn from this forum, I'm in a location that is saturated with these cars and that's somewhat odd to me for a state with such a small population. GT500's are all over around here and they don't get a second look in traffic.
