The SubSafe program is interesting in that material used in Mfg. or repair of these systems can be traced back to where the material was mined..

Yeah so much went wrong with that as they was basically using systems that wasn't to far from what they was using during WWII in that subs design.

Crazy...reminds me of the trip to Bahrain from Texas. I was stationed on the USS Raven a coastal Minehunter. We were on the Blue Marlin a Heavy Lift shift, one of the two largest in the world. During the transit is when a Russian sub went down. Reports were that they were alive but no one but the US could get to them in time, and we're not allowed to do so. They all died, subs are crazy and glad I was surface Navy.

I started my career working for a company owned by a submariner from the early 60’s. I heard a lot of incredibly interesting stories from him. He was in the navy when in a short time period a number of subs were lost.

Osprey class for the Minehunters and Avenger class for the Minesweeper. Been on many of each.

A lot of things in the military are actually tracked in a similar manner. In aviation for example flight critical components are tracked for the life of the component and actual hours of flight. Where the component has been and how much flight time on it fallows those parts for their lifetime. Lot numbers and manufacturers codes are also required. Some parts have requirements that one part of a lot is tested to failure, the parts don't leave the manufacturer until the test is completed. If that one part from that lot fails before its supposed to the entire lot is junked.

Got my first tat in Rota around 93. We kept our Mk60 Captor Mines there and would go TAD once a quarter to change their secret settings. Bar hoping was awesome.
