DEARBORN, Mich., June 16, 2020 – After a 17-year hiatus, the all-new Mustang Mach 1 fastback coupe makes its world premiere – becoming the modern pinnacle of style, handling and 5.0-liter V-8 pony car performance.

“Bold styling, great acceleration and speed – Mach 1 says it all,” said Jim Farley, Ford’s chief operating officer. “This is one of those special Mustangs that truly brings a smile to the faces of our owners, enthusiasts and fans – including me – so there’s never been a better time to bring back Mach 1 and have it go global too.”

Ford’s quest for speed began with Henry Ford in 1901 and the company’s roots within aerospace only furthered its desire to deliver quicker, faster and more powerful vehicles. Calling back Chuck Yeager’s feat becoming the first to break the sound barrier – Mach 1 – Ford delivered its original Mach 1 in 1969, setting 295 speed and endurance records in its first model year at the Bonneville Salt Flats. Thanks to its added handling capability, Mach 1 teams earned back-to-back SCCA Manufacturer’s Rally Championships in 1969 and 1970.

Like the original, the all-new Mach 1 bridges the gap between Mustang GT and Shelby® models, delivering V-8 power, unique functional aerodynamic enhancements, competition-capable suspension upgrades and a driver-focused cockpit.

All-New Mach 1 Muscle

The all-new Mustang Mach 1 is set to become the most track-capable 5.0-liter Mustang ever, courtesy of a newly designed front end, plus Ford Performance parts from Mustang Shelby GT350 and Shelby GT500 models and an available Handling Package for greater at-limit handling.

Packing a specially calibrated 5.0-liter V8 engine that has a projected 480 horsepower at 7,000 rpm and 420 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,600 rpm, Mach 1 is a fitting celebration of a nameplate born more than 50 years ago.

Integrated into the Mach 1 engine are revised Shelby GT350 components including the intake manifold, oil filter adapter and engine oil cooler, increasing engine oil cooling capability by 50 percent.

The all-new version leans on decades of Ford Performance learnings, wearing a uniquely crafted front end for aerodynamic efficiency and a host of Ford Performance parts that help celebrate its iconic heritage. Mach 1 comes standard with a Tremec™ 3160 6-speed manual transmission from the Shelby GT350. For the first time, Ford has outfitted the system with rev-matching and the transmission is paired with the GT350 oil cooler system and Mustang GT’s twin-disc clutch and short-throw shifter.

Drivers can also opt for an available 10-speed SelectShift™ automatic transmission with an upgraded torque converter and unique calibration that enables optimizing torque capability, shift character and overall enhanced performance. A second air-to-oil cooler increases cooling capacity by 75 percent.

Recapturing Mach 1 Style

The all-new Mach 1’s grille harkens back to the original with a deep 3-D mesh, shark-nosed section and faux lamp elements. Flanking the fascia are new side grilles below each turn signal lamp. A low-gloss Magnetic pony badge is centered on the grille. Low-gloss magnetic and black accents throughout the vehicle provide a premium look while staying true to Mach 1’s bold, muscular heritage, including low-gloss Magnetic mirror caps and rear spoiler.

New 19-inch x 9.5-inch, and 19-inch x 10-inch five-spoke Tarnished Dark-painted aluminum wheels are a modern version of the classic Magnum 500 style wheels. Handling Package vehicles come standard with unique, wider 19-inch x 10.5-inch front, and 19-inch x 11-inch rear Tarnished Dark-painted aluminum wheels.

The Handling Package – exclusively available with the Tremec™ 3160 6-speed manual transmission – also includes a larger unique higher downforce front splitter, new front wheel lip moldings, and a low-gloss Magnetic swing spoiler with a Gurney flap and rear tire spats from Shelby GT500.

Satin Black side and hood stripes are included with reflective accent stripes in any of three colors: Red, White and Orange (Appearance Package only). Exterior color options include the Mach 1 exclusive Fighter Jet Gray (Appearance Package only), as well as Iconic Silver, Shadow Black, Oxford White, Velocity Blue, Twister Orange, Race Red and Grabber Yellow.

The interior features a unique Dark Spindrift instrument panel with aluminum accents. Ebony seats with an accent stripe hint at Mach 1 heritage in cars equipped with a leather interior. Other interior upgrades include new door sill plates, an updated splash screen on the 12.3-inch all-LCD instrument cluster, a white cue ball shift knob, and engraved badging that displays the vehicle’s unique chassis number.

Mach 1: Built to Perform

The Mach 1 engineering and design teams worked in tandem to develop a front end unique to the Mach 1 persona that also meets the high aerodynamic demands of the engine, transmission and braking systems.

A new two-piece upper grille, lower grille and valance, and new side grilles, all contribute to Mach 1’s signature look and more demanding aero and cooling performance requirements.

A front splitter optimized to the fascia shape improves track performance and provides a more aggressive appearance, while a matched rear spoiler works in concert to create ideal lift balance. Mach 1 features 22 percent more downforce than a Mustang GT with Performance Pack Level 1 and the downforce improvement jumps to approximately 150 percent with the Handling Package.

To enhance track endurance, the team added two side heat exchangers – one to cool engine oil, the other transmission oil – as well as a rear axle cooling system and lower diffuser from Shelby GT500.

A new underbelly pan, the vehicle’s most aerodynamically important upgrade, extends 20 inches further rearward than on a Mustang GT Performance Pack to smooth and increase the airflow under the front of the car. Large underwing features in the belly pan increase downforce, while special belly pan airfoils in the brake cooling ramps improve downforce and assist the brake cooling flow – a first for Mustang.

To improve ride and handling, Mach 1 features the latest MagneRide calibration, a stiffer steering I-shaft, new EPAS calibration, stiffer sway bars and front springs, a brake booster from the Mustang GT Performance Pack Level 2, 9.5-inch/10-inch split fitment wheels with Michelin PS4 tires, a rear subframe with stiffer bushings and a rear toe-link from Shelby GT500.

The all-new and limited-edition 2021 Mustang Mach 1 will arrive in U.S. and Canadian Ford dealerships in the spring of 2021.

I guess I just don't get why make another road course car...with the sticker thats gonna come on these cars why not just but a GT350 for a twisty track weapon. You knew it would be a mostly parts bin car but was hoping maybe it would be more of a drag pack car.
 
Thats fair on the price.

I bought my 12 GT500 brand new for $47,000 +TTL. Calculate inflation, that would be $52,000 today... Better bang for the buck in my opinion for me. I'm sure these GTs/Machs/Bullitt would be better road and twisty drivers, but thats not my use. Hard to believe a 500 today costs twice that of mine.

They are sharp cars though.

You bought the top dog 8 years ago for $47K. Now a GT premium PP1 car costs around $50K. Don't get me wrong, 460 HP stock is great, but that's crazy.

that’s another problem, Ford is turning focus towards more track oriented set ups but the majority of their buyers aren’t taking them to the track. I feel like this Mach should have had a blower on it and if it rang in at 550-600 hp it still wouldn’t encroach on the GT500 buying segment

I can understand not having the blower, 500hp with some gears and goodies to go straight would be perfect. The issue with these twisty track cars is there just aren't that many places to use them. The events that are available with SCCA and such you're only using first and second, maaaaaybe third on occasion, not like you even make use of the giant ass brakes and cooling. There's still plenty of drag strips around here though
 
I missed it, but is it being offered in other colors beside white & blue?

The car is nice for what it is. It is also indicative of where monies are budgeted. The phaseout has begun.

The phaseout of the S550 or Mustang?
 
That along with newly developed 5.0/5.2 engines. Ford wants to jump straight to electrification and that's where the money is being directed. Nonetheless, I think they did a good job with the Mach. It doesn't have everything it could have but provides a solid foundation, as does a similarly equipped GT.
 
Not too impressed on looks. It looks stunning don't get me wrong, but, it doesn't look like an homage to the Mach 1 in the sense the 2003/2004 Mach 1 did with with the hood scoop, the wheels, exterior trim pieces, interior pieces likes like the seats and so forth.

You mean the car that was basically a Bullitt with a hood scoop? :D

I like this one, a lot, and I understand why they did what they did. I get that the price will quickly change my mind though, you guys are right about that. Regardless, give me the white/grey one without the hood stripe!

I guess you could look at it that way. I choose to look at it in simplicities sake. The car had a certain nuance in 03/04. This version has too much going on. Besides the 03/04 Cobra, the GT350 is my favorite Mustang every (with a Stripe delete) and that car for that most part is very basic, with all the business in the engine bay.
 
I was wrong. I just remembered that the Bullitt had a warmed over 2V and the Mach1 had the 4V N/A motor. Same, or very similar interiors though.

I think you also have to take into consideration that this was around 2002 when news the 2003 Cobra and 2003 Mach 1 were going to be released. A time in America where there was little innovation, the horsepower wars were non-existant, and even hearing of a car breaking 300hp was pretty stellar. So to look back at the 2003 Mach 1 and think, "hey, it only had this or that," is a little self-deprocating.

I'm not an 03/04 Mach 1 expert, but from what I remember the manual version had a Kellog forged crank like the 03/04 Cobra, it was a 4V that had high-flowing heads, a high RPM N/A engine. The Mach 1 had the very sought after WAP aluminum engine block. Yes, the seats are the same as the 03/04 Cobra, which are the same as the 2001 Bullitt, which all had different coverings, and were great seats. I can't say I liked the manual transmission, as it had long throws. I got to drive my friend's 03' DSG Mach 1 quite often. I think some people were love it or hate it when it came to the wheels, but they did grow on me and I do think they did throw back to the original Mach 1 in a way. The cluster was simple, yet distinctly fit for a Mach 1.

The Bullitt was anemic, as all new edge 2Vs were, unless they had forced induction like mine had, and I still do love the styling the body had.

I can't blame Ford for branching out with "new" models, but to me the GT350 is the most pure and raw Mustang they have ever built to this day.

Yes sir. Go Bucks. Buckeye Alum here. I'm just glad we still have Fields, but really sad to see J.K. Dobbins go. The Ravens got a really great pick with him. My team is the Redskins and I was just ecstatic to see Chase Young get picked by them. All though my Skins are perennial losers, they hopefully now have a solid defense with Jack Del Rio leading the defense and switching to a 4-3. Plus we still got our other Buckeye to Buckeye connection Haskins to McLaurin.

Now that I have had the time to think about it, I'm excited for the Mach 1. I just can't shake the anticipated disappointment when I see the cost. I like the styling, especially on the white car pictured in the publicity photos. I think the 480 HP is a little disappointing but I understand that Ford didn't want to mess with the Voodoo due to oil consumption. I'm sure 500+ HP is easily achievable with simple mods. All the other features in aero and suspension (it even has a shorty shifter and great transmission!) combined with the styling make me interested in it...I just don't want to see the price. It is the 3,000 pound elephant in the room.
