My off grid cabin I live in , has solar , batteries , and 16k duel fuel generator backup .
Electric start , with a cute little keyfob to start and shut it off .
All appliances and heat run on propane as well , so it is easy maintenance and supply .
Generator will run on gasoline if I want .
Currently propane is 2.29 a gallon , and gas is 2.14 .

Here is one i just put into a pump station for a municipality. Kohler KD1000. 1000kw, 1600amps max, 277/480v, 3 phase. 3000 gallon sub base fuel tank. Radiator can pull 30,000cfm of air at full blast. V-12, twin turbocharged, 50psi of boost. Maximum horsepower is 1114hp @ 1800rpm. 70.9gph at 100% load. Just a monster of a generator.

The intake for the radiator/room. 30000+CFM through this damper assembly when fully open.

How long will it run on that much fuel? That thing is massive.

Had an I-6 in a Ford truck. No speed, but would pull like a train. Great motor.

100% load is just over 36 hours. 50% load which is the design capacity for the next 10 years is 72 hours. Once they surpass the 10 year mark the whole unit will be evaluated for continued use as the station will then become the main pumping unit for the area.

The best part of it all is due to the ridiculous exhaust system requirements(county decibel ordinance) the radiator fan is louder than the exhaust. Exhaust is 14" inner diameter with a 22" outer jacket and ceramic wrap between the two.

Its insanely quiet for something so powerful.

KOHLER is a great GENSET. I have one for emergency power just for our server room at the office.

you using that for primary power?

No, just as backup though we have run on them for extended periods and can if we needed to. That’s only 1 of the 6 we have. You should see the diesel bill when we have to fill up @8000 gallons per each genset.

They do make larger ones iirc. We have 2.5MW Cats but I believe there were similarly spec’d Kohlers in the original bid.

I just had no idea they made engines, I only associate the name with toilets and faucets.

Next you guys are going to tell me Kitchen Aid builds the pistons for Ferrari lol.

Loads of fun working in this field. Plus job security in a world like this. Everyone is slowing down and layoffs like crazy and all my guys are steadily working overtime every week. It is a blessing.

By no means can I compare to any of these ones y'all have been posting. But september of last year we had the hurricane come thru and wreck a good part of the city. Dad brought over the old generator from my child hood, but the tank died on it and leaked on me. So 12 hours from landfall, I found myself at Lowes buying one of the only Gen's I could find which was a Cat Commercial Contractor grade big daddy unit. I left it in the box hoping I wouldn't need it, but I unfortunately did.

Power went out and we were on generator for about 2 1/2 days. I had to assemble that thing by flashlight in the middle of a hurricane, but I did. It fired right up, gave us some life back. About 35-50% load for 2 1/2 days straight, and it used about 12 gallons. Saved all of our food, gave us the ability to watch tv/entertain ourselves, and clean up the debris. It was well worth it.

I pulled it out the other day and let it run for about 30 minutes with more fuel treatment in it. It fired up on the first pull and didn't stutter. Never owned anything made by CAT before but i'm impressed. I'll eventually go Generac/Natural gas powered though.

I kid you not, but this is the gen I have used for the last 4 hurricanes:

This little thing runs the lights, TV, wi-fi, 2 refers, computers, etc. We usually get power back pretty quickly, but I have run it for 3 days straight to keep beer cold in the kegerator before. I have a bigger Generac, but the power has never been off long enough to justify bringing it out.

Pulled out the BIG GUNS. That thing is massive.

39k lbs iirc. I think it’s rated at ~2000hp & 6500tq. It’s set up for 4160v though since we’re running some heavy machinery across 85 acres.
