I've had 2 different issues lately that I haven't been able to get the data I need using LiveLink2. I know theres a few apps such as the Torque App, Dashboss etc... I'd rather do something like that than Forscan which is Ford specific since we have a few GM products in the mix.

Right now Im dealing with a hard start on our 05 6.0 powerstroke (don't turn this into a motor discussion and likely causes, just trying to narrow it down) and I cant see things like Hpop pressure, ficm sync or IPR%. I need literally 5 things to diagnose the hard start and I can only get 2 which is frustrating as hell.

The other vehicle is an 06 suburban trying to see if anything will read the fuel tank pressure sensor voltage to confirm a bad sensor.

Are you looking for a simple handheld scanner or a legit Snap-on or Autel scanner that costs a few grand?

not looking to spend 1000s, I would spend up to 200 maybe even 300 for software and OBD2 adapter. I haven't had much time to dig into it but it looks like apps like I mentioned above have more features than SCT for looking at data

Not sure if this is the best hand held
But it was 350

I did get a chance to work on a power stroke. Glad I had fords manual for codes

I used fords 6.0 bible link for resources

kinda looks like the Autel we have here at work which isnt even as good as my Xcal/livelink. I guess this is where I struggle - is there a name/term for the type of data Im trying to read to narrow down what does/doesn't read it.

again my main example being FICM sync. Neither of my devices will read it but the Torque app and Dashboss will

ya im good on that, thanks. ficm voltage is fine but on this long start issue need to verify sync along with the voltage, hpop pressure, ipr % and voltage. Im 99% sure its a leak under the valve covers but ive run into this a few times that if I had a more robust piece of software I could trouble shoot much faster

To identify a faulty FICM, monitor a scan data PID called FICM_MPWR. The data should read 48 volts or slightly higher

No FICM synchronization while cranking the engine with the ICP, RPM and VPWR signals correct usually indicates a loss of the CMP or CKP synchronization signal. Refer to the appropriate pinpoint test for diagnosis. Refer to Section 6, Control System Diagnostic Sheet Reference for normal operating values.

Possible Causes:

  • Weak battery or starter.

  • Circuitry.

  • CKP sensor.

  • CMP sensor.
GO to Pinpoint Test D for CKP sensor diagnosis.

GO to Pinpoint Test V for CMP sensor diagnosis.

I do see ficmsync in manual pid list

It’s on/off signal

Wonder if my scanner has if
A google search sent me to Bosch 1350

I just played on cobra and seen it shows me intercooler pump on/off which wasn’t in my tuner.

No codes says it’s working as long as scanner was right that you used.

The manual has a long check list just for hard to start issues.
With step by step how to.

It was deep in details

How to operate these tools is another class.

Quick search showed autel as a very good scanner and should do what your looking for

Find out model of scanner and than search for user manuals that aren’t with tool.
Or even a forum for autel

I basically had the same issue a couple of weeks ago, i put a stud in the front drivers side valve cover (shouldn't of been there), it ended up in the harness no wires were hurt that i could see, thinking it was messing with the crank or cam sensor signal, i could move the harness around and it would run but eventually find its way back to the stud. i have a PDF of the wiring harness thats on 1 page if you can't find what your hunting with a scanner, i couldn't other than a no sync condition.

Sounds like a high pressure oil leak. You can check it without any scan tools. Remove the ICP sensor and get a fitting that will screw into the rail that will accept an air fitting. Get an IPR pigtail and extend the wires so you can hook it up to power and ground. Apply some shop air into the system and close off the IPR by hooking it up to the battery power and ground.
