Wait a minute. He's at the bank waiting in line to apply for a loan, right? Must be, because banks have more than one line. Hmmm, where are his parents who were co-signing on the loan? He's there alone. Doesn't make sense at all unless I missed something re-browsing through this thread.
Yeah it's just confusing.... If it's a scam, to what end. What does he gain at this point?

1. With the deposit idea gone, and cash being demanded by me, there is very little way he can financially gain. I don't see a conceal carry guy traveling 900 miles to try to take a car by gun point.

2. If he was just some cobro giving me a hard time about the price, why keep it going this far. He has invested so much time in this. Jokes on him at this point.

3. If his plan is to tell me he has 38k, but shows up with say only 28k and a sob story without telling me first. I'll have to break it to him, you going to have a long ride home.

That isn’t really cause for concern, just poor planning. When I go to my credit union or bank and want to speak to a rep that isn’t a window worker I have to wait in line and even one person ahead can take time.

You really think he was in a line to ask a question? o_O Time is running out. He has to do two things. Withdraw funds for the bulk of the sale. And then he needed a personal loan for the balance, co-signed by his parents. After all, he's only 20. So where are his parents, because he must have been there to get the loan.

This is one of the strangest (in so many ways) stories I've ever heard. Scam? Joke (on the buyer's end)? Deal that fell apart because his parents decided not to co-sign? Who knows.

So much bullshit in those messages and things he's telling you...

How much time (maybe money to) would you say you've spent so far on going back and forth communicating with this guy, and preparing all the stuff for selling? Few hours? That's a lot of wasted time if this doesn't work out.

People jerk others around like that all the time just for entertainment, that's why i've been skeptical from the get-go.... CV355 just said he's trying to figure out this guys angle, his angle sounds like he's just trying to jerk you around and make you go through hoops for nothing, just to see you do it... The "too good to be true" offer should of been a red-flag right from the start.

That's why we dropped it on the mostly dressed Steeda K, and not my bare oem K. At this point, unless something drastic happens Friday, I'm just going to finish it.

My Mechanic has a total knee replacement surgery only 7 weeks away so we got to keep moving.

From here on out, I won't be messaging him first. I'll forget abiut him and see how much work he is willing to do to make the deal work

That's what I can't figure out- if Intervention302 has the guy's contact info, what's the kid up to? Doesn't sound like a scam (though you can't rule it out completely), and it's too involved and lengthy to be a run of the mill "let's just screw with this guy" trolling adventure.

One option, the kid thinks he has or can get money that he can't actually get, and now he is struggling and backpedaling. That's why he'd offer high, because he may not have an actual understanding or appreciation of money.

People that troll for entertainment don't usually use real info- it's burner numbers, emails, etc. And they don't drag it out this long... they lose interest fast and move on to another target. If the kid is really trolling in this manner:
A) He's a sociopath
B) It's deliberate (revenge, etc)
C) He really sucks at trolling
D) Some combination of the above

Sounds like a typical 20 year old to me. Genuinely wants the car but possibly can't get it together but too stubborn to admit it

How about the fact he gave me the name of his father's restuarant?

Semi checks out. Can't 100% link into him. But its 10 minutes from the address he gave me and he has reviewed the location from his own personal FB 5 years ago.

If it's actually his Family's spot, and he was a scammer, he isn't bright.

The worst part is he hadn't once tried to bargain/barter with me. He just says yup that will work

I'm putting 90% on that he is unintentionally playing games with money he doesn't have or is struggling to get.

I really don't think he's trying to scam you, I think it's just a kid who is genuinely interested but isn't really sure exactly what he's doing and how to come up with all the money. You have a significant amount of personal information on him, no scammer is really going to go through this length to keep you on the hook, they hit quick and they're out and on to the next.

Call the father's restaurant.

"Sir, I've been talking with your son about purchasing my Cobra. If my son was buying a car like this I would have some questions or concerns, is there anything I can shed light on for you? Are you going to come pick it up with him?" Etc etc etc

I'd change the first couple of words, "sir, your son contacted me about buying my car. My car wasn't for sale, no ads anywhere, and he reached out to me to buy." Then continue on.

I'd want to make sure that the father knows you're not an aggressive seller that won't back down, just a car enthusiast that was given a worthwhile "make me move" offer

At this point I would just be short with him...i.e, you just let me know when you're coming, otherwise we essentially don't need to be messaging anymore.
