I read that article just yesterday also.
The bummer is we are one of those affected people. We are waiting on the class action settlement that is being challenged to get thrown out before we can do anything.
We bought our 2013 Focus brand new and when we traded it in 2017, we only got $5k for it. We couldnt keep it any longer though. It was going in every 6 months for a fix, being kept a minimum of overnight every time and the transmission was leaking for the second time.
I am just disappointed that Ford executives are such ****ing douchebags. Looks like they better lube up!

Had a 2011 power shit equipped fiesta (yeah, yeah, I know) with 50k trouble free miles. Guess I was one of the lucky ones. Shifted very bizarre at low speeds though.

Brother in law has a 2017 Fiesta SE with the Power Shift and its been a nightmare for him. Think they replaced the transmission at 26k miles, then replaced the control module at 27k miles, THEN replaced the transmission again at 30k. The last one has been running good for and he is currently at 52k miles.

He doesnt expect it to last much longer as it acts funky on the highway and occasionally around town. Feels like it slips every few gear changes on the highway.

They estimate legal fees to be less than the cost of a recall. This happens all the time and is nothing new.

that maybe true but the cost of lost future sales over the next 10yrs is far greater than both combined. It only takes one bad experience on a major purchase to lose a customer for life. On top of that you probably lose any potential sales from anyone in their immediate family.

That's all well and good, but as the cars begin to age, and wear and tear sets in, people are going to die. Whether from the inability to accelerate, or the car popping out of gear, or the front seals blowing out, someone is going to get hurt. I'm sure some already have.

It's similar to the GM ignition switch issue. Known problem. Thought the legal fees would fix it. Ended up catching on fire and killing people. That's when the "ROI and legal fees" balance you speak of becomes null and void. GM kills people = brand trust killed, lives lost, way more money spent than if they'd of recalled the switch.

Understand, I'm not defending them, I'm just stating the way it works. It sucks, but you're almost never going to get a large corporation to just do something out of the goodness of their hearts. The only language is money.

Estimated loss of sales is a pretty intangible figure, but the immediate cost of $x... to recall and replace is a very real figure to them.

Thank goodness my girl knows how to drive a stick, she had 3 focus’ in a row, all trouble free.

Tried to get her into an ST or RS but she was done with small cars.

She went to a 17 Escape and now a 19 Lincoln MKC.

GF's 2013 FOcus SE has had constant issues with that trans. Such a POS. Going from a stop, unless the pedal is to the floor the thing shudders and slips like the car can't decide what gear to be in. I've never heard her complain about, nor have I experienced the highway speed slipping issue. The trans has been serviced more than 5 times and it hasn't helped a single bit.

The thing that pisses me off the most is this is my GF's first Ford and she's starting to think "Fords are trash."

When I worked for Ford I would always jump to write up that generation focus/fiesta because I knew 90% of the time they were there for a transmission issue lol. I had a third party warranty company deny repairs because its a "dual clutch transmission" and clutches are not covered. I'm like you sold her a plan that covers auto trans problems, customers just know its an automatic, not that it has clutch packs. They loop-holed the shit out of that one.

Thank you for posting this thread. I reached out to a buddy that purchased a Focus recently and it made his day. He had no idea of how widespread the issue was.

Ouch! Don't let that happen! My wife converted over to Ford in 2017 and is a pure-blood Ford girl now, t-shirts and everything. Plus, I finally got her to drive a Mustang and she loved it.

Years back a girl I sort of dated was looking for a new car. I told her over and over and over not to buy an automatic Focus. I told her to look at literally any other brand.

Guess what she ****ing bought?

The sad part is the rest of the car is quite solid, the manuals are inexpensive, fuel efficient, decent little drivers.

Im the biggest Blue Oval guy you could ask for, but Id never touch one of those shit boxes. Which is a damn shame. I cant even imagine the idiocy of the program manager when they had an opportunity to put a different, non DCT auto in it and stuck with the design for 9 YEARS.

You put a questionable design in two high volume production cars and then spend more on deny deny deny than put a reliable transmission in it? Yeah, they deserve to get ****ed on this one.
