: The 2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 makes 760 horsepower and 625 lb-ft of torque. Put a tombstone on the '60s, the real horsepower wars are right freakin' now.
Clearly, they got well over 700. The GT500 out-horses the 755-hp Corvette ZR1, our 2019 Performance Car of the Year, though the Chevy's 715 lb-ft of torque way out-flex the Mustang's 625. That's likely down to displacement: The top-shelf 'Vette makes due with 6.2 liters and a blower, Ford's supercharged V-8 displaces a full liter less.

We still don't have performance numbers, though Ford has hinted plenty about what the GT500 could be capable of. The automaker promises a mid-three-second 0-60 time, and Owens told us the new Shelby will be "the fastest Mustang we've produced, left and right," hinting at skidpad and road-course domination. Oh, and a sub-11-second quarter-mile, just for fun.

I don't know what it is but I haven't been underwhelmed by a Shelby Mustang / SVT Cobra launch in over 20 years. I want to like this car but I just can't at this point. Maybe it will grow on me. I like the HP numbers but the torque still falls short of the outgoing GT500 and we still don't have the official 0-60, 1/4 mile times. Also, why are the Hellcats and ZR1s are allowed to go 200 mph and this car is limited to 180?

Ford famously claimed that the 2013 Shelby GT500 was good for 200 mph in a straight line. That car had 662 supercharged horsepower, so you might think that the 2020 GT500, with its 700-plus hp could go even faster, but that won't be the case. Our colleagues at Car and Driver report that Ford has decided to limit the new GT500 to 180 mph.

Why? Well, it costs a lot to engineer a car to do 200 mph, and Ford thought it'd be wiser to engineer a new dual-clutch transmission and develop a high-downforce aero package for the car. Ford Performance wants the new GT500 to dominate at the drag strip and on a road course, and for that, exceeding 180 mph apparently isn't necessary.

So, the 13/14 GT500 will the last official Big Dog Shelby? I can live with that.

Almost the horses I have now in my 08 with less torque. Now how much does it weigh? I am sure they will sell a bunch of them but it is waaaay out of my price range what ever that will be.

I hope @Zemedici goes back to reread and see that it says most powerful Ford, and most horsepower/torque PER LITER.
I'm not going to knock the car. The GT500 will be a beast, and it will put smiles on a lot of faces. Their marketing, and claiming the most HP per liter doesn't sit well with me though.

760 is not a shabby number on a Pony / Muscle car. In fact, it is downright nasty off the factory floor. Now to see what enthusiasts do with these cars? What are their limits? How fragile is the engine and the rest of the drivetrain?

I'm still disappointed in the release, and the manner of description concerning the cars HP.

...and I have to say it; "Venom didn't kill Demons".
