Hi everyone!

I'm still sliding around with my stock Goodyear in my 14 000 miles pullied Cobra. I only make about 4-500 miles per summer with my car. Durability is not an issue.

I would like to hook in first gear and keep my stock 17x9 wheels. Which tire would you choose among the following?

275/40/17 NT05 or NT05R
315/35/17 Nitto 555R

Thanks!

subd as I am going through tire selection as well. I do not think you can get or want a 315 on a 9 inch rim. I am looking at 305 on 9.5 and that is too narrow. It does not matter anyway since your contact patch is only going to be 9 inches so anything over 275 is wasted.

Correct you will not be able to properly mount a 315 on a stock 9in cobra rim.

I would say run a 275/40 R17 555R on the rear and a 275/40 R17 555 or G2 in the front.

Thanks for the reply. I know that many people have run the 315 555r over the years with a slight bulgde on the 17x9 and I know it's not ideal but I'm worried that the 275 will look to narrow.

That's why I lean more for the NT05R if I go for a drag radial.

So, good weather only I'd go with a mickey street SS over any of the nitro tires for hooking in 1st gear. If you are dead set on one of those 3, the nt05r is the best tire for traction out of the 3.

Yeah the MT SS was my first choice as I only drive the car in good weather but they're about 100 bucks more than the NT05R here in Canada. I'm not sure it's worth it for my use

I understand that. Definitely more bite with the 05R when comparing the nittos. I wouldnt advise driving them in the rain though. Never had issues when I got caught out with the 555Rs in the rain, but they just dont hook as well. Hopefully that helps. I had multiple sets of each in 275/40/17 as well and that was when I had a pullied Eaton.

Good luck.

Stock

315 555r on 10 inch wheel and it’s still spins with ease.
What pressure are you running them at? I've found if I keep then up at "normal" pressures (36ish psi) they spin a lot more. I keep them at 30-32psi and they hook fine.

DR should always be run at lower pressure. I run the DRs for everyday street driving about 26-28 cold.
Over 30 is asking them to spin.

I just had my NT05R installed today! I was wondering if you had done a heat cycle with your Nitto DR.

If yes, have you seen any difference in traction or durability?

Thanks!

Didnt really have enough "data" on it, but I did drive freeway speeds for a bit, then a quick burnout, let them cool, and do it again. I was at the track a ton that year and my tire life isnt really a good indicator of what they are capable of...hahaha

I’ve ran 10s on 315/35/20 NT05Rs, but never paid for heat cycling but usually find a way to do one burnout in the first few days they’re installed.
If you’re just looking for street Traction and rare drag strip use, I don’t think you have to do a burn out heat cycle, although fun :)
I’d just recommend a good long burnout at the track if you go.
How do you like them so far?

Thank you both for your quick answer. I'll probably only take the car for a spin on the freeway and let them sit for 24-48h.

I just did a gentle drive to come back home from the shop yesterday with a voice in my head screaming wooot at every stops and lights. lol
I'll let you know.
