I have a 03 Mach 1 that is making an engine knock noise. I took it to a shop and all they said was that the noise is coming from the bottom end and that it'll need a new/rebuilt engine. I don't mind doing that, but I don't want to spend the money if I don't need to right now. I don't have room in my garage nor all the tools to pull the engine myself. The car has 117k on it, here is the noise it's making.

sounds like rod knock best thing to do is to pull the timing cover and check your tensioners to see if any of them are collapsed, or drop the pan and see if you any metal shavings or play in any of the rods

Finally got the valve cover off, turned the engine to see if anything was stuck/binding and everything looked good. Grabbed a flashlight and looked around some. Got to the front where the chain is and noticed a piece of plastic near the bottom. The piece of plastic looks like it was from the bottom part of the chain guide. Tried to figure out how to get it out, finally got it with a clothes hanger and needle nose. Inspected everything I could and didn't see anything messed up. Gonna start putting it back together and see what happens.

There will still be a noise, and the rest of the plastic tensioner will self destruct. I would advice replacing it.

Man only took you a year and a half to get the valve cover off?? Impressive.

I know, pretty fast huh!

The car wasn't a big priority, I had house projects going on, normal daily stuff and frankly I would forget about it.

I've blown up some motors, never once have they sounded that bad.. Think you have more problems than a just a piece of plastic... Rod with no piston....?
Curious to know.

So now that it’s off, you going to have tot repaired or tackle it yourself? What’s next?

Talked to a guy that lives down the block from me and his brother wrecked his dad's 04 Mach 1 with 57,000 miles. There is nothing wrong with the motor and the interior is perfect. It's going up for auction, I'm going to try and get it to transplant things into my car. Although I did think about pulling the cover off and taking a peek in there to see if I can find anything else.
