G'day, you good c#$%s!

Ive a little bit of a semi unique situation going on in the land from down under at the moment. I've got myself an L67 (supercharged 3800) in my Calais (Commodore/4 door GTO) and Ive really stretched the little M90 to its limits. If i was to maybe interchill the massive w2a core, which isn't an under the blower unit, or go ethanol, then id possibly be able to get more out of it. Currently putting out 430hp with 560ft lb and its time to crack the 500hp mark. Ive ended up getting an M122 blower, one off the ford GT500. It came with a fly-by-wire setup on the throttle body, but will be running a mechanical throttle.

Some things id like to know more about is aftermarket TB's, elbows (U-bends) and porting of these chargers. Any links you guys can provide me, be it all theory, i'm more than happy to grab a beverage and have a night time read and always happy to share what I get done should you guys want to... despite it being a ford forum, ill always appreciate a performance vehicle ;)

VMP Tuning makes a mechanical version of the GT500 throttle body. That might be what you need. It's pretty popular with the Cobra guys running the TVS.

I'm not sure about the porting. I'd imagine the usual suspects such as Stiegmeier does some porting. I think there's another company called Jokerz. How hard is it going to be to mount the blower in the place of the M90?

legend! Thanks mate. Ill get onto reading and looking into the two companies that you've listed.

Changing up form the M90 will just require making up an adaptor plate to go between the charger and the A2A splitter that sits under the blower. Ill also need to make up an external bypass, as there is too much air that had the potential to flow through the charger and into the pipe work. It makes it hard to tune for idle if i don't because there is too much time between the air going into the charger, into the pipe work, through the W2A intercooler, back up the pipe work and then into the lower intake manifold when under vacuum. Ill grab a photo and show you the set up. itll make more sense

So the charged air gets pushed out the front of the plate, into the big water to air intercooler and then pushed back up to the back of the engine bay and into the lower intake manifold. Adding an interchiller would be great, but intake temps at wide open throttle, with this huge intercooler, are at max 10 degrees Celsius above ambient after a few back to back dyno runs.

Edit: A better photo to see the plate between the charger and the intake manifold

That's a helluva set up. Did you do it all yourself?

Thanks dude. Yeah, mostly built the engine and have done most of the fabrication/install myself. Theres a few things like welding and tuning that a mate of mine has done for me, but theres been a bit of a collective effort from a few people to put forward the concepts that made it what it is. defiantly build and not bought. The T56 was the biggest of the custom works. The 3800 aint made to fit to the 6 speed lol, but we got it there.

How long is the M122 compared to the M90? Will you be able to fit it in the same spot? It doesn't look like you have a lot of room front to back.

Yeah, it'll fit and ive the snout to suit. This has been done a few times with other chargers like an M112, TVS, a few whipples too; however, this setup is a little different from theirs, so we'll see what things we come across and we'll tackle them as we go.

This was a mates around 10 years ago, with a whipple. the bonnet (hood) was only cut into to fit the bird catcher.

I did a very crude home port of the M122 on my car. Unfortunately I didnt take any pics. But research Stiegemeier ported and Posi Ported M122s. The big areas to concentrate are the discharge port and the left side inner feed ramp to the rotor. Smoothing as much of the outer radius will also help.

The VMP M122 high flow elbow and a port match (along with removal of material to left side rotor feed ramp) will help the blower breath better.

You guys and gals down under sure love your hot rods! :D

One of the reasons I enjoyed visiting Australia so much were the hot rods. There were a lot of V8's with aftermarket exhausts running around.

Yes, i understand about home porting lol. Damn, i love seeing DIY work, giving things a go. On my little M90 at the moment, its had so much porting that a lot of the charger had been metal filled. Ive taken it beyond its casting in a few spots to increase volume. These aftermarket u-bends/elbows from VMP look like there going to have more added volume than what id be able to take out of the standard one. A mate actually CAD up our own aftermarket elbow for our M90s on the commodores here in Aus, could flow over a third of the standard when ported. Its small percenters, but if i can do it once and do it right, why not.

Oh yeah, the LS blokes... almost every one of them. Exhaust, OTR and tune, not much over 300rwkw, if at all. The Ford guys over here though, gentlemen... The 4l turbo straight 6 has killed the 2JZ and will make a shit tone more power and a lot less than the V8 variants. No more Aussie car manufacturing anymore, ****ing government. No more aussie made engines and cars.

Having a look through here though, some fairdinkum shit and some cool setups. I dont get hung up on Ford V Chev(Holden), or the muscle and tuner (if thats an actual thing over there), I just appreciate worked cars.

Update for those interested.

So, charger is on and working like a charm. Found a guy here in Aus that imports M122’s. He makes an adaptor kit for the LS1s and sourced a stock electronic throttle. Had to make the throttle body cable driven, that was the only real hard part. Used the standard fuel rails with the injector extenders that we already had. Made a custom intake pipe, chopped the alternator and remade mounts to make it fit... other than tapping and blocking the Vac fittings on the back of the blower, it was relatively straightforward.

The blower has the standard pulley on it, but with my underdriven crank pulley, the shorter length of the belt difference and the volume of the external w2a cooler volume it needs to fill, i see 16psi in the intake manifold. One more psi than I was making with the little M90, but doing it way more efficiently.

Now it’s a matter of tuning, smaller pulley selection and seeing how much the bottom end can handle I guess.

Very nice. I have a Kenne Bell Throttle body that is mechanical and mounted just where yours is so that is another option.

Thanks, mate. I looked at options for throttle bodies, but the postage to Aus was more than the item themselves half the time lol. I just modified the stock one.

Also, here’s a video of how hard the M90 was working. You can really hear how much the 52mm (2.04inch) pulley was spinning the rotors

It’s just the standard size that comes with the M122, but with the smaller crank pulley, idle and tensioner length, it’s spinning the blower faster. To what degree, who knows, I CBF doing the maths tbh, but it’s on par with what we could max the little M90 to, so I’m happy.

I will go smaller again with a press on hub and make a custom pulley with the CNC. I have to do this because I’ve turned the pulley around and will need the design it to have a little more strength over the ribs. What will determines the pulley size will be a bit of trial and error. One pulley size smaller for me might see more of a boost increase than you guys see.
