What insurance company?

I had them all insured as daily drivers through USAA until a few weeks ago. This allowed my teenage sons to drive the cars occasionally. I just recently moved the Cobras over to an agreed value collector car policy with Hagerty, but this excludes drivers under 25 years old. I left my Shelby on my USAA policy with our other daily drivers though since I drive that car quite a bit. My kids can still pilot that one at least and they each have their own Mustang to enjoy.

What are the dimensions of your shop? I am trying to get some ideas for a new shop and am just curious.

It is currently 40x40 with 14.5’ walls and about 18’ at the peak. It sits on a 40x62 slab though... the back area is basketball for my kids, but when they are done with the court (soon) the garage will expand to the full 40x62.

With 40x40, it’s good space to have two rows of 4 cars (8 total) with room to work around them. This is an old aerial view, but doesn’t show the area under my loft.

Thanks for responding. What would you do differently if you could?
I’ll answer for him, because I just built a 40x80 around the same time—it’s never big enough :)
That Goose nest is a show piece, very impressive buddy!

I really can’t think of anything. This was my first garage build. I did a bunch of research and I’m happy with my planning and the end results. Making the garage expandable was a nice feature so it can grow as I need. Normally a 40x40 has a heavy beam in the middle with lighter beams on the ends. Mine is set up with another heavy beam on the side that will expand. I also had anchors sunk into the slab in the corners of the basketball court where the future end beam will be welded to. One other thing I did was to have my electrician run circuits for the future expansion and terminated them in a box in the back corner. This allowed me to have them buried in the spray foam insulation versus running them later. Another thing I did was to have the whole slab poured thick. I wasn’t sure where I’d end up putting lifts, so we went with 2x6s for forms and also had lots of crossing much thicker footings. We used a crap ton of concrete, but this allowed versatility with lifts later. The tall ceiling allowed lifts anywhere and enabled me to build a loft to get all my extra parts off the floor. My HVAC guy recommended a 2-headed mini-split heat pump that does a great job keeping the temp comfortable year round. Two inches of spray foam insulation help as well.

Hope that all helps.

Thank you sir! 40x80 is HUGE! Do you climate control it? I’d love to see some pics.

My plan so far is to build a 50x50 with roll up doors on the front and back and a separate room on the side for washing in any weather. That way I can get the car in the back out without having to move the one in the front and no longer think it is too cold or hot to wash a car.
I too will build it high enough to put a lift anywhere it needs to go and to also allow me a storage room for a second floor. I want two lifts, a drive on and a post lift. The drive on will come up into the second floor so it can be used as an elevator.

Sounds awesome! I see you are in GA. Do you plan to climate control the garage? It will be stifling hot in there if you don’t (sun baking on the metal makes it hot). Even if you plan to just insulate it without air conditioning, I’d recommend not going to with roll-up doors. You can’t insulate roll-up doors and they will be HOT when the sun hits them. I went with the highest R value 14x12 doors I could buy and happy I did. My garage is quite comfortable year-round. Prior to getting mine spray foamed during the build, it was unbearable in there in the summer. I took a laser temp reading of the metal ceiling... it was 140 degrees!

I put an 8’ metal ceiling fan in the middle to circulate air 24/7 and also have the 2-headed mini-split heat pump that I use to keep it mid 50s during the winter and mid to upper 70s during the summer.

You should always consider collector car insurance. Heck plenty of us with newer cars use Grundy, Hagerty, ect.

When I find a foxbody notch I'll be adding that to my Grundy policy.

Nice looking cobra!

Yes, I will do heat/ac, way too hot in the summer not to. One of the problems with the type of door that you used is you can't have a car on a lift with the door open unless it is a tall door opening. Is that correct or can that be done?
I like the idea of a fan, had not thought of that.

I think you are correct if you go with a short door. My doors are 12’ tall though... I think you could do it with my doors. My current lift and future lifts will all be on the opposite wall, away from my doors, which deconflicts.

If you are going to climate control the garage, you are definitely going to want insulated doors!

These are incredible looking cars... amazing how valuable they have become. This was my dream car in high school. Unfortunately by today’s standards in stock form it’s a pretty boring car to drive though and if you mod it out it will loose it’s value. Quite the catch 22...

I often wonder what my 2004 will be like in another 10 years. It’s never lost value but hadn’t really gained either.

The 93 Cobra was my high school dream car too, and I was like a kid again when I bought mine. I have modded mine a bit to make it more enjoyable, but have the stock parts just in case they get 70 Chevelle LS6 territory. I’m not too worried about losing it’s value because it’s how I want it, and will more than likely never sell it anyway.
As far as the 03, 04’s go, I’m guessing they have not gained a lot in value because it’s still simply not their time in the grand collector market, but it has to be at some point. The loyalists love these cars and think they are as valuable as anything else on the road, But it’s a wait and see if the rest of the car enthusiasts recognize them for what they are.

I have other much faster cars I play hard in. When I drive my 100% stock 93, I enjoy the time capsule that it is. If it was my only “fun car,” I’d be much more inclined to mod it into a serious performer, but I’ll be preserving mine just as it is.

I hear ya... it would just feel really weird pulling up next to some kid in a Subaru or even an ecoboost mustang knowing they will blow the doors off this beautiful cobra.

Unfortunately I don’t have the space or money to start a collection so I’ll keep modding my 04!

Ya, I need to revisit my collector agreed value, it's been a while since I've upped it.

Go as big as you can on any shop/garage build, you'll use every bit of the space. I went 30 wide by 40 deep with scissor trusses to get the high ceiling, and with a deck on the man door side, I can do 4 cars comfortably. Toss in a half ton 4 door truck and car, forget about it, not enough length to park them end to end.

YES! I went 40x40 expandable to 40x62 and plan to slowly fill it with toys. Don’t rule out adding some 4-post lifts. I recently had a couple BendPak 4-posters installed and it opened up some floor space.

What model 2 post is that? You buy it directly from Bendpak?

It’s their tallest 2-post lift and yes, I bought all 3 lifts directly from BendPak. The extra tall lift is nice for tall guys. A 6-4 friend of mine and I did an exhaust swap on his car on my lift. He was happy that he could stand fully upright while working. I also used it as an elevator to get my heavy air compressor up in the loft.
