Adding VMP/Roush blower this summer...advice?

I want to finally pull the trigger in adding a VMP / Roush blower this summer for a extra kick in power to help offset the loss of power at altitude in Colorado. I believe I will install it myself...doesn’t look overly complicated if I take my time.

I’m more concerned with reliability and ease of install, so am leaning towards the VMP GEN II-R 2.3L TVS STAGE 1 kit and it’s plug n play harnesses.

Since I drive the local 2.5 road course just for fun about once a year, should I be careful concerned about the oil pump gears or upgrading the radiator? Was thinking about the radiator, but oil pump gear install is outside my comfort zone.

Can't go wrong with either one OP. Both are outstanding.
A lot depends on where you bring it to have the tune done or remote tuning. I suggest VMP's triple pass, dual fan heat extractor as well if you are doing road courses as well. You'll need the best cooling you can get.

Can’t agree more with tones and Sid’s comments above. Go vmp gen2r stage 2 and you won’t regret it. You’ll wind up buying the fanned hx, Bap and larger injectors later and paying more if you don’t now. I did it last fall and install was stupid easy with their directions. If you feel comfortable doing that install by yourself you can likely tackle opgs yourself too. Look up blazer707s write up on the install, I used that as my guide along with ford service guide. It is intimidating at first but not terrible. Good luck!

Believe I have settled on the VMP Gen II-R setup...just waffling between Stage I or II.

I’m looking more from a reliability perspective, which is one reason I may be happy with the Stage 1 setup. However, if I take it out on the local road course (once a year), then the upgraded HE may be beneficial from the stage II.

I’ve read through the VMP install instructions, and will probably tackle it myself...seems basic enough if you take your time. I did a search for the blazer707s install, but didn’t find anything.

I won’t install it until mid-June as I’m entered in the Mustang Steamboat Springs autox event and have to keep it stock.

Blazers opg write up can be found in the how to section of 11-14 mustang forum.
As for the harnesses they’re all plug and play except having to pin a connector for iat2 sensor which isn’t bad if you take your time.

I like the VMP plug n play harnesses to reduce mods to existing wiring. The IAT mod doesn’t look hard, but I still don’t like having to solder into existing wiring.

I will take a look at the how to section for the write up.

The soldering part isn’t bad. Just make sure you strip the wire far enough away from the pcm connector and look up proper way to solder wires. Turns out I’ve been doing it wrong for years lol

Can’t go wrong with VMP or Whipple.
I have a good friend with a Ford Racing Gen 1 Coyote Whipple kit new in box. He will sell for a great price if anyone is interested PM me.

I just finished installing a Roush kit on my 2014 GT. I bought the upgrade VMP triple pass dual fan HE to install instead of the Roush supplied unit because I want to run mine on road course too, but I ended up taking the fans off the VMP after hearing debate about pro/cons of the fans. There's been other topics of conversation on here about this, and this from the Department of Boost:

Why You Don’t Want Fans On Your Heat Exchanger

I wish I had saved a few bucks by getting a H/E without fans. You might want to consider the 13-14 GT500 coolant pump for greatly increased flow through the system too.

I was thinking of upgrading the radiator to something like this. I’m curious if there would be any figment issues from the HE? I would think this would be more beneficial in keeping engine temps down.

Ford Performance Mustang Aluminum Radiator M-8005-MGT (05-14 GT w/ Manual Transmission)

I upgraded my radiator at the same time I installed VMP HE with zero fitment issues caused by HE (radiator had it's own easily resolved minor fitment issues) A radiator upgrade along with a 170° thermostat is a good idea with the added power and will go a long way to controlling engine overtemp, but won't help control supercharger heat soak and keeping intake air temps down. With the extended use of boost on a road coarse this will be an issue, high IATs and your car will pull timing/power to prevent detonation. Anything to maximize intercooler effectiveness will help; better HE, better coolant flow, better air flow thru HE, etc. At road course speeds fans on the HE will actually hider air flow, usefull only in stop & go traffic (probably not using boost here anyway) or between drag pulls.

I'll have to check that out. I didn't know that about the fans.

I'd go with the VMP's new 2650 at whichever level kit you want (talk to them and tell them what you're after). It'll be spun slower at the same boost level of a smaller 2300 blower and should equate to lower iat's, which is better for everything. I'd prefer VMP over Roush just from a tuning stand-point and also more upgrade-able if you want more power later. Until you turn up the wick and plan to really start beating on it, I personally wouldn't even open up the motor to do oil pump gears unless you'd sleep better at night.

I would say the only reason to go Roush over VMP is if you are in California and need a CARB sticker to pass smog. Roush has it, VMP does not. I would have gone with a VMP over the Roush if I could have.

Stick with the 2.3, no need to pay more for the 2.65 especially on a stock motor. Id imagine you will either run a 82mm or 85mm pulley, both will not spin the 2.3 hard and your IATs should not be a problem.

Id recommend doing OPG at the same time especially if you plan on road coursing it. On the street you would probably be fine but on a road course that blower is going to be spun hard and for extended periods.

As for tuning there are several who have this set up dialed in. Make sure they know you will road course it as they will prolly tune on the conservative side. Good luck with the project.
