How much increased salary would it take you to change companies? I am Radiology Director at a hospital and am currently looking for another job. My current hospital has just offered me a $30,000 retention bonus per year if I sign a 2 year agreement. I think that I read somewhere that a minimum of a $15,000 increase is what it takes to be worth changing companies.

I just changed companies for a 10% increase. That plus the upward mobility made it worth the jump to me. I think the amount is going to vary person to person.

If the reason you're looking for another job is just money, then I would sign the 2 year contract and get paid. If there are other reasons you are looking to leave, then there is no way I would lock myself in for 2 years of my life.

is this on top of a pay increase? if not I wouldn't bother with it. at your job level I would think 10-15% increase would be enough of an enticement to move. putting a specific number on it like 15k is kinda silly because for some that could be a 50% increase for others a 1% increase. Personally I wouldn't move for less that 10% unless I was seriously unhappy. but I don't look for a job when I am unhappy.

I'm having lunch today with a guy I've worked for 3 different times. I'm expecting to get a total comp increase of about 20% to go work for him again. He's always taken care of me in the past, and will likely do so this time. Find the right guy and hump his leg for your whole career.

I would leave tomorrow if I had a position that paid the same but allowed a better work/life balance / less stress.

I turned down a job with a 40% pay increase because of an hour commute last year. (I hate driving with a passion. Love cars, HATE driving)

It all comes down to what your motivations are.

This is an entirely subjective question. It entirely depends on your personal work situation and what your motivations are. I have turned down a couple of offers that were in the 20% range because I am in a very good work situation right now, my commute is easy which is huge in the Bay Area, and I am really good friends with my Boss and my Bosses Boss which cant be underestimated.

I just turned away from a X2 pay increase. But that required me to be away from home on a 10/4 schedule. Not interested right now plus my job is so cushy

My recent move was just a 5% increase in base pay. But factoring in bonuses, flexibility, company vehicle, meals, fuel, etc... and it becomes a bigger change.

I have less stress, I am specialized in what I work on now, and have more opportunities for OT.

I work the factory life at a butter plant. I'm a shift lead and run a crew of 30 people. 4 weeks of days, then 4 weeks of nights, 12 1/2 hour shifts.

I also hate commuting, takes me 5 minutes at most to get to work.

The main reason I stay is PTO and I only work half the year, or 12-13 days a month.

Time off is way more important to me.

If he’s always taken care of you why have you left him?

16 years of service and I jumped a year ago for a pay cut. Money isn't everything sometimes. I actually make more but had to work a little OT to do it. (Straight time OT though since I'm salary Non-exempt)
Benefits, people and future are better, the future being the main thing. I was deadheaded where I was and no way in hell I can do 12 more years of shift work.

Just did this last month..

20k extra plus bonuses .. plus my own schedule.

Started at 10k, but that wasn’t enough

I went back to a prior company the beginning of last year for a 5k salary cut and extended my drive and hour but set up a bonus plan to net me 26-32k more pending on performance metrics. Last year I closed out 28k higher and if my sales per month match what I did 3rd and 4th quarter last year I’ll make top end of that bonus plan.

Also set myself up to be groomed for a regional managing position vs the current 1 store GM I am so it was worth the risk and drive.

To get me to jump ship again I’d at least need a 20k raise or something that pays the same but puts me much closer to home.

I decided to change careers, but not for money. I wanted quality of life the most. Havent looked back. Self employed, doing ok. Get to travel several times a year. I never miss a holiday at home. Never miss a birthday. Never have to ask or compete for a day off, and im almost to the point where the wife wont have to work unless she wants to.

That to me beats a pay check any day and twice on sundays.

Good question. The past two times HE LEFT ME. :(

About 6 years ago I was a direct report of his at we'll call Company L when he jumped ship to a competitor (Company A) that we had both worked at before. A couple months later I jumped ship to "A" and worked for a New Product Introduction Manufacturing Engineering group that supported his Design Engineering Group. About six months later he got an offer he couldn't refuse to go back to "L." I was in a good position making much more than I ever had so I stayed put. I've now been there five years and am ready to do something different.

Previous to all of that, we both worked at a startup that was acquired. He was fired along with most of the other senior guys and went on to be a VP at Solyndra, yeah that Solyndra. I was kind of sick and tired of the Silicon Valley grind at the time so I turned down an offer to be the first Supply Chain employee or about #6 overall there. I instead went and learned to be a machinist working in a two man shop for about 4 years when I did go and work for him at Solyndra. He then left to go to "L" above and I followed him.

He's my age (47) and is Managing Dir / VP level, but I'm not sure which. I think he's got about 100 people working for him. The gig he's talking to me about is a "Lab and Applications Manager" where I'd manage about 10 technicians and process engineers using semiconductor manufacturing tools to demonstrate process results to existing customers. He also mentioned that a woman who runs a large engineering group there (L) is also looking for someone with my skill set to work in her group. I used to support her group so we're pretty familiar to each other.

Just trying to make the most of my Business degree from Chico State.

Same here, I prefer my home time more. I have been full-time military (Active Duty, ANG civil service technician, activated traditional, and now AGR) for the past 16 years but I did try a few stints in the civilian sector. I got on as an Operator with Lyondell here in Houston a couple of years ago, however it didn't take me long to figure out working 20+ more hours a week wasn't worth the moderate pay increase. I then decided to go back to my squadron and snagged an AGR position. Once I retire in a few years I'll try again.
