Have they really raised the selling price of trucks? Or just raised the MSRP?

On black Friday week my brother picked up an '18 F-150. The dealer's advertised offer was 25% off MSRP on any vehicle. The final selling price took several additional thousand $ off of that. Maybe at least in part it's a marketing gimmick so they can always advertise a BIG SALE THIS WEEK ONLY! (And next week, too and so on.....). People love to think they are getting a bargain but if no one ever pays full price your discount isn't really real, is it?

Got to admit my brother felt pretty good about his deal even after I explained how Obama had just artificially raised his MSRP. Thanks, Obama.

Sure is a nice truck.

This was the business model of a dealership I worked at 10 years ago... It was always a BIG SALE.. Its all about markup and perception!

sold my $30k truck for a F250 7.3 PSD. No regrets at all. Best part is, I can beat the shit out of it and not care at all. Aint no mall crawler.

I love it! I subbed a small plow route of long rural driveways. The guy didn’t want to plow them because the low hanging branches scratched his truck. Haha!

That's what I like about my 2003 Duramax. My son would see mud holes in a field we parked in for football practice and we would hit them without hesitation. If I get a new truck I'll have to really take care of it and clean it and stuff. If putting a short block and built trans in it wouldn't cost me $12-$15k I would consider doing that and just keep on truck'n.

with the price of new trucks where they are though we will be looking for something used to leave at our place in NC. The old suburban still runs well but throwing trash in the back to take to the transfer area sucks. But then again the 3 valve F150s are a royal pain in the ass with the spark plugs and cam phaser stuff, the Chevys with displacement on demand where out the pushrods or some shit...

Problem I've found with used trucks is its very rare to find a high mileage/durable enough truck to handle the rigors of multiple motor/trans replacements through its lifetime.

If you use your truck like a truck, obviously dents, dings, scratches etc don't matter. But when you get to the point where the axle assembly is so god blessed worn out that you're replacing the ring/pinion, axles, bearings, seals, and diff, it gets expensive fast.

Despite what it may seem, very few trucks in the last 30 years can be rebuilt 10 times and not wear out even the hard parts. Then you run into trouble finding those parts, and you find yourself not enjoying the busted up weatherstripping evacuating out any semblance of heat and AC from the cab.

Male Bravado aside, even the best trucks get retired when they are simply that worn out. 77-79 F100's were arguably the best built, most reliable Fords to grace the blacktop and corn fields. How many do you see riding around as daily beaters/work trucks still? Yea, not many if any at all. We can say what we want, but their is definitely a shelf life on every vehicle built.

Maybe I’m the oddity but I don’t think I’ve ever owned a daily use type vehicle I’ve even wanted to keep for 10 + years. I’d think for a truck I’d be happy with 6-7 years specially since newer tech keeps rolling out making trucks even more efficient.

Maybe I’m the oddity but I don’t think I’ve ever owned a daily use type vehicle I’ve even wanted to keep for 10 + years. I’d think for a truck I’d be happy with 6-7 years specially since newer tech keeps rolling out making trucks even more efficient.

Hell I keep shit 18 months....

I have taken a different approach. I focused my time on making more revenue than squeezing expenses. My discretionary income has risen exponentially with this approach. I am not suggesting spending like a drunken sailor, rather where I focus my time.

If driving an old truck requires me to spend a saturday working on it away from the family/wife, or potentially absorbing social time where I can network/find new financial opportunities, then I will buy a new one.

Piece of advice I was given when I was about 24 in my first corporate job out of college was "Leave the car stuff behind. You need to focus on making money, and only making money. When you've got plenty of money, buy what you want, do what you want, and work on what you want, because you have that much money".

I didn't listen to him at the time. Drove a C head swapped cobra, drank myself silly at the bar every night, lived alone in a new city. Bad depressing times for me. Bought a new ST eventually. Parked the cobra. Solid it like a dummy. Then rain through cars like underwear.

Have since settled down, got married, realized what he said was right but in moderation it's okay. So I sold the Coupe, bought the truck, have proceeded to enjoy the hell out of driving/modding it, and scratched the itch when I want to be in the garage but don't carry the weight of "I really need to install that motor". If I don't want to be in shop for a month, I don't have too. If I want to install a supercharger, I just order the Roush kit for the F150. It's freeing actually.
