Why has suicide become such a viable option?

Life lost its flavor years ago for me. Little to no enjoyment left outside the time I spend with my daughter. Frankly, I think it's a much more common scenario than people would believe. But, I don't think it's a reason to commit suicide. I think there's likely more going on than just that.

It's difficult to understand what's going on in the mind of someone considering suicide.

I understand and can appreciate that- and I do believe you're correct in many of those cases. Apathy is a slow killer- like a long fade-out. The opposite end of the spectrum is incidental, reaction to trauma - immediate loss of family, possessions, career/lifestyle, etc.

And since we're all being totally honest here- the "flavor" of life is as short-lived as a stick of gum. It's temporary, and that's how the brain stays stimulated. We all know that. The "secret" that is so obvious yet so incredibly hard to grasp is that long-term contentment and simplicity is far more rewarding than little spikes of "flavor." I know it's true, but damned if I don't use those "flavor spikes" to pull myself through rough times. "Eyes on the prize" is how many of us temporarily distract ourselves from hardships by danging a carrot on a stick. Truth be told, that's how I wound up with the Mach 1. Not trying to turn this topic about me, at all, just using personal experience to describe those sorts of situations.

Social media is the cancerous amplifier to modern society. Parents creating weak and coddled youth are leading to weaker people. Combine all that with people already predispositioned to have mental disorders and you just dropped a grenade in the middle of everything.

Very well stated.

Because there is a total disregard for human life these days and getting worse.
Days of having a conscience, doing the right thing or thinking about the consequences are fewer and fewer. Every single day on the news in my state, there are at least 3 people shot and people run over with cars. Everyday just about.
It's sad really.

Well the fact that people will stand record someone dying instead of rendering aid tell you all about their mindset

Another reason why I never watch the news. Always sad and depressing stuff. Sure I might not be up on my current events, oh well. Don't read the paper either. I've been doing this for a long time.

Life is too turbulent and stressful these days. The expectations are high, rewards are thin, and the sacrifices to achieve them are steep.

"Life is too turbulent and stressful these days. The expectations are high, rewards are thin, and the sacrifices to achieve them are steep."

"Society" seems to place a premium on material success I.E. money...and maybe the misinterpreted Nietzschean "will to power."

It is unfortunate that anyone who is not well off and struggling is often looked at as a failure without taking time to understand what they may have had to overcome or the repeated blows they may have suffered not from their own doing.

The Book of Job explains this..yet most folks come off as Job's "friends" in the way that they "comforted" him.

It seems like some folks need their success to be worshiped and yet still need to dance on others misfortunes. There are forces outside Cause and Effect; that is scary to most people.

Though I am an atheist now, I still believe that life needs to be a measure of what we individually overcome. Friends help sometimes; although we are lucky should we actually have one good friend and not only some sorry (still jealous) comforters by our side.

Edit: I have to add that it is good to note that the way God made a bet with the Devil on Job's faith shows that God does play dice with the universe...beyond cause and effect. I.E. sometimes shit happens.

Yeah, good call man. I don't watch tv at all, but I have the news on in the background when on the PC.
You're right though. All it is, is bad news, doom and gloom.

We have developed a society where individuals don't have coping skills and have never been tested.

Growing up, if you don't like something, quit. This builds zero character and no sense of responsibility. Once an adult, they are faced with adversity and they quit.

Now I will say, mental health programs are none existent. In the early 90s mental health funding was cut drastically. Now we treat people with medication with zero character building programs.

It's a revolving door. Have a breakdown, go to hospital, get them to be a zombie on medication, release them, they can't afford or choose not to take meds. Then the cycle repeats, jamming up the system not allowing for any type of real therapy.
Add the acceptance of recreational drug use and it goes off the chain.

These people generally don't have a roll model to help them navigate hard situations. My father was always there to push me to succeed and hold me to a standard, this is a rarity now days.

Ok, I'll divulge a little on my own experience. You hit the nail on the head my friend. Last year landed me in a hospital 3 times- thought I was having a heart attack for one, and EKG came back fine, blood pressure high, they attributed it to a panic attack. I was sleep deprived, stressed to the max, and in a dark place all around. One wrong move and everything my wife and I had would have been gone.

Talking with a doctor about the "problem" was a mess. They handed me a stack of paperwork to fill out. It was a series of surveys. I looked up and said "I don't want to fill this crap out. Either you're going to slap a straight jacket on me, or you'll have police at my house to confiscate my firearms, or both." I was assured that would not happen except in extreme cases, and I also took a moment to explain my perspective. It took a solid hour to complete the surveys. A nurse came in, sat down, and talked to me. I explained that everything was crumbling, I wasn't sleeping, I was blacking out randomly, and if I didn't keep subjecting myself to overworking, I'd lose my job and many others would too. I refused benzos- that's playing with fire. What I was really looking for was a medical leave of absence so I could pick up the pieces and rest. Time for prescription #1. Didn't work. Ok, try prescription #2. Month in, didn't work but congrats you have ulcers now. Ok, how about this one? This leads up to a few weeks ago where I find out that my migraines, vision issues, neck stiffness, and inability to look at any lights was due to aseptic meningitis, which was a 1/100,000 chance side effect from a medication. I said "nope, I'm done with this crap" and I've been trying willpower and natural remedies to help with stress management.

I'm persistent, resilient, and admittedly "hyper vigilant." If it was this hard for me, I can completely understand how someone with less willpower would simply crumble with the way the system is, or become a permanent zombie on SSRIs (which, by the way, is "serendipity science" since the "chemical imbalance" schtick is just a theory with supporting evidence, but not completely understood at this time).

You're a good man for standing by her and through it.
I honestly don't deserve her, but I try to give her my best. But I certainly fall short.
I counsel many people with anxiety and panic. My daughter suffers from it. I have also been there. It is not an easy life.

You probably have a much greater grasp on the situation, it's really tough. I think the one thing that keeps my wife going is her faith in Christ.

It sounds like you have a better grasp and understanding than most, to be honest. You should give yourself more credit!

I can promise you that I don't deserve my wife. She is an amazing woman that puts up with more than she should from me.

As for a grasp on depression and amxiety, every situation is different. Each has to be evaluated on an individual basis.

One thing I have found that helps more than anything is faith. I'm not going to turn this into a religious discussion, just sharing what I have seen.

We need to start stressing that suicide is not a viable option. Many who commit suicide are not, in fact, suffering from depression. They view it merely as a way out of a difficult time be it unemployment, social pressures, heartache, family problems, addiction, financial straits, bullying, etc

Good point Michael. My agency requires us to take suicide awareness training every year. It basically tells you to coddle
the person, dont tell anybody, etc. Just a very soft approach.

If it were a friend or family member I'd def take more action than what I've been "trained" to do. Fyi its online; check the box type of deal

Listen to the song I posted at the end of page 2. It hits your points and thankfully they’re a super popular band, so it very well could hit a few that are on the line.

The USAF teaches us ACE. I may get the acronym ****ed up, but it holds true...A-ask i.e. ask the hard question “are you intending to commit suicide?”, C-care i.e. provide care/remove means of self-harm, E-escort i.e. ensure they get to the professionals without leaving their side.

I think the majority of the “training” we get is a joke. But the ACE method can work, if the person is willing to answer the question. Which as far as I can tell (in my experience) works a majority of the time. One of the reasons I think this thread (and the ones they’ve made in the past) are awesome. Sometimes it’s just the question needing to be asked.

Our online training doesnt sound quite the same as yours. But I know I'd intervene however I could.

People, VegasMichael I have things that bring me joy but as life in this country now is f**ked up. I am going through a very high conflict divorce, fired my lawyer and now have been opening my eye to alot of what has been happening right under our noses. I met a beautiful young woman that now shows me what men are missing. Suicide rates are up because of the war on masculinity and men. Women think they are the better parent and I can confidently say this, they are the weaker sex for a reason! Fathers are committing suicide because the government pays to take them out due to being a higher paid provider. Kids commit suicide due to the lack of that father figure. For daughters, fathers are what they judge a mate for love and relationships. Sons are taught strength and to provide, protect. But beyond all that fathers out of the way for families makes women and children rely on the government. Stronger reliance, make a weaker society and brings socialism. People in power stay and the weak become slaves to the government. People are beginning to see it and feel no way out. Fathers see corrupt family courts and money hungry POS lawyers like a mountain they can't climb so they take the easy way out to become pain free. Most don't understand, it is worse because you never stop mourning the loss of a child because they are still alive but you can't touch or see them the due to corrupt judges who were lawyers. Beyond all that is the economy. Big pharma, won't sell cures, psychs won't help or cure, and the Gov. Just wants to legalize every drug to make even the rich richer. We the people, is my only hope for making a better future for my boys. Also think of this, why are there so many transgender, LGBTQ, and such, why is this being shoved down our throats? Is it to weaken this country from within?

1. Broken homes. Fewer and fewer fathers and society thinks that’s fine.
2. Society has become far too secular. People of faith are demonized more than ever before, church membership at historic low.
3. Lack of personal responsibility for all bad life decisions!
4. The truth hurts sometimes! Getting through tough times builds character and prepares you for more tough times the future will surely bring.

The thing is you have someone like me who has accomplished nothing in their life, but surviving. Life has been rough as hell for me. Ive lost everything: 2 vehicles, a motorcycle, evicted and had to live with my wife’s family so we could get our money together. Not to mention being unemployed for a year because nobody wanted to hire my ass.

The point to telling you that is Ive been on the very bottom looking up and have been busted back down multiple times and it sucked. There were days I thought things were never gonna get better and the truth is my life is the best it’s ever been. I dont have to money to live like most the members on this site and I’m fine with that. Its my place in life same as y'all have y’alls. People need to learn to accept that not everyone is gonna be a winner at life and suicide is not gonna help them.

Coddling and saying everyone is a winner is crap. Someone has to be the young guy like gimme at the time telling the old guy like me who had been at the job forever what to do. Believe me I hate have to listen to guys young enough to be my kid because they were born into a better situation than me and were able to move up in life earlier. At the end of the day life is a game and someone’s gonna win and some of us are gonna lose. Just be happy you are still in the game and not everyday is a guaranteed loser and not everyday is a guaranteed winner.
