Help with Cobra Brakes and Wheels

I'm not sure I should be posting here or maybe in the SN95/New Edge. I'm looking at buying a 1993 Cobra that has been built to be a track car (road course). It's a one owner car and he has all the history of his build. Here is what he says is installed for brakes.

Front: 94-04 Cobra spindles and brake package, and brake cooling ducts.
Rear: 94-04 Cobra brakes.

The only wheels he currently has with the car are 95 Cobra R Wheels with 275/40/17 tires (he did a little fender "work").

I'm wondering, what are some good but not overly expensive brakes I could look at to improve the braking of this car? This is one area he admits is kind of a weak link. I'd prefer that whatever brakes I'd get fit under the current wheels but I'd also like to look at a set of lighter wheels for road racing so I would also like any wheel suggestions you might have.

If this deal works out I'm going to be making it even more of a road racer by getting better racing seats, better brakes, extra wheels and some major aero (big wing and a front splitter).

Thanks!

There are a ton more options for better braking in the aftermarket world, back when he was modifying the car the 94-04 dual piston caliper was probably the best setup. You need to decide on a wheel option, and size to determine how much space you will have, now that it is 5 lug there are more options for bigger wheels then 17" now days. You might look at some drilled rotors or slotted to see if that helps the setup now.

I originally converted my 93 street model to a 93 R model setup (functionally the same as the 94-04 CObra setup) and ran the 94 GT 17x8 rims. Those brakes, with the proper pads, handled every track I ran. Later, I used the 4-piston Brembo calipers from a 2000 R model and 1998 Cobra 17x8 rims. No fitment issues.

The Cobra 99-04 brakes are not bad at all especially on the lighter foxes.

If you wanted to go to a 4-piston front caliper, that would give you more clamping forces. I guess it depends what you mean by "overly expensive". Baer has front 4-piston setups starting at around $1500 for 13" rotors, 14" would be a few hundred more. Rear 13" 2 piston will start around $1600 and go up from there.

More of a budget would be to optimize the rotors and pads.... may not get much better clamping force, but will help fade on those track days.

I looked at the Baer 13" as I think the 14" require 18" wheels. Ideally I would like them to fit under the current 17x9 Cobra R wheels on the car. I'd be OK with $1500-$1600 for a 4 piston setup on the front. Would I need a new master cylinder? Other wheels I'd look at for track use are SVE FR500 wheels in 17x9.

I would however consider running 18" if the 18x10 SVE Drifts I have now for my 13 Boss Laguna Seca would fit. I'm guessing I'd need a wide body kit, long studs and wheel spacers? Please tell me if I'm wrong. I don't mind the idea of going that route as the car would be mainly a track toy. I would keep it street legal for the occasional Mustang club gathering.

Get the Brembo 2000R calipers. They are 4 piston, use the stock 94-04 Cobra rotors and bolt right to the 94-04 spindles. Your master cylinder is perfect for the setup. And best yet, they'll fit the rims you have.

Have you used this combo before? I ask because I thought when I read the details on the 2000R calipers that they required 18" wheels. I'll read up on them more.

I have a 95 Cobra, but I do run the 2000 R Brembo brakes on mine and use the 17 inch Cobra R wheel, no fitment issues.

Thanks everyone. Right now he's wanting a little more than what I originally thought he said so the deal may not happen.
