I’m at the stage of cutting out the cancer on my 66’s rear quarters.

Any advice from others that have already done it?
Pics are greatly appreciated.

I've done it several times. I'm pushing my 65 coupe into the shop today.

I apologize for the huge delay. New to the app, didn’t set notification and left for Hawaii for 9 days.

In my opinion you will be better off replacing the entire quarter panel and likely the outer wheelhouse. Results will be better and less welding will be needed. I found a NOS Ford quarter for mine but that was $320 20 years ago. Not sure what they are now...and not sure of the quality of aftermarket quarters.

I would order a new rear quarter panel from Mustangs Unlimited. I would personally cut out the areas marked and used them as a template to cut those sections out of the new quarter panel. Test fit, tack weld, then butt weld everything in to button it up.

A die grinder will work perfectly.

Looks like my quarters are in decent shape. I suggest getting a whole quarter. You will likely need the inner trunk drops too. Make sure your trunk gutter under trunk lid is good before I describe easy repair.

The best is to over cut your donors. Sawzall works good. Once off, drill out spot welds in door jamb flanges and in the rear around taillight panel. It would be good to Check out your wheel wells also, and cut accordingly.

I marked with the white pen where I would cut. I stay clear of anything behind the rear vent window and in the valley, because they used lead to blend in panels at the factory and that is a mess to work with.

After you cut donors, you can trace to the car and over cut a 1/2 inch. Then use a combination edge flange/hole punch tool to form edge on car.

Then punch holes in donor fender cut edge for the new spot welds to hold until fully welded.

A great inexpensive tool to use is a grinder. These blades can be bought at Lowes.

I've cut miles of metal with these blades. Not bragging, but this is the ultimate tool for cutting metal without any wrapping.

Nibblers - ABLK 18 1.3 TE Select | FEIN

It is $800 tool with battery. But invaluable in commercial metal building construction. Adjusting head and perfect for even corrugated metal. Cuts a perfect line with practice.
