first time dealing with a clutch going out. Is there a specific clutch that I should look into getting? Car is pretty much all stock besides a Cold air intake and Magpack exhaust.

Plans for the immediate future is gears. Maybe add a power adder in the very far future

King cobra is all you need for a mild build and they have great feel and bite. I use a spec stage 3+ for my boosted application and like it a lot, but its a bit more expensive.

I'm looking into the King Cobra's now..Hopefully it's lighter than what the previous owner installed, that one was pretty stiff, my left leg is a lot stronger than the right one now haha.

I'm still open to suggestions. The shop is checking it out to confirm it's the clutch then they'll call me with their parts and labor price, if I can find a good clutch myself they'll install for me. I would love to do this myself but I wasn't expecting to have to replace the clutch for awhile, not like this week LOL...

Yep that Valeo is looking like a good buy, cheap and should last with a few bolt ons if I ever get that far. I'm wondering if I should go ahead and have them replace the shift forks while it's in for the repair? Probably a good idea right?

Anyone have any first hand experience on how heavy the King Cobra's are? I saw one post on Stangnet, a guy said the King Cobra clutch he installed was about 250% stiffer than stock. That sounds very similar to how mine felt before it went out.

In comparison, I drove a 2014 GT500 and that clutch was like butter, omg so smooth and easy to press.

Get a spec clutch.

Sent from my SM-G892A using the svtperformance.com mobile app
Stage 2 or Stage 1?

Shop called back and said the clutch they can get is a "OEM" type. It's a Zoom brand? Idk, they could get it for $379 and I could definitely get a spec clutch stage 2 for a few bucks cheaper. Only thing is, it would require an aluminum flywheel according to American Muscle's site.

Any other thoughts? I don't really want to drop $700+ on the clutch kit + flywheel but if those are my only options then shit. Lol.

Damn. This will be fun, I hope my dad is ready. It was his idea to get this Cobra anyway, hope he's ready to open up that wallet haha.

Going to see if he's willing to help out with that. If not, any other cheaper options? I do understand that you "get what you pay for". But those Valeo King Cobra Clutches seem to get pretty good reviews and they're cheap, what's the reason to get the Spec clutch over the Valeo King Cobra Clutch? This is pretty much a Daily Driver for me.

Sorry for all of the questions but hey, I was taught you won't learn anything or get anywhere if you don't ask questions. Specifically the right questions.

Thanks to the guys who have been chiming in too, I really appreciate you all.

The King Cobra clutch is made by OEM manufacturer Valeo. I've had one in my Cobra for the last 60k miles/12 years, no slip, no chatter. For 4 of those years it was my daily. They are rock solid for a bolt on Cobra.
Also keep in mind it will be a stiff pedal, but that's what I like anyway. Reminds me that I'm driving a muscle car. :D

Think I’m going to go with the king cobra, if it blows then maybe I’ll check out the Spec stage.

If I were installing everything myself I’d check out the Spec clutch. But gotta pay labor lol.

May I also give one more piece of advice? Grab a Timken throw out bearing. The one that comes with the KC clutch is great, but the Timken is better. You don't want the t.o.b. chirping a few thousand miles down the road.

Definitely will do that. With the 300 I save from not having to buy an aluminum flywheel that should be no problem to purchase

Ok, so here's my list to get her back up and running.

  • Valeo King Cobra Clutch (Same one mentioned in Post #4)
  • Timken T.O.B
  • Resurface the Fly wheel
  • FRPP Clutch Fork
  • Prothane Trans mount

I looked at Exedy and they look like good option as well.
Last thing before I get everything ordered, I found another model of the king cobra that is $199, supposedly supports more hp. Would it be worth it to get that one or stick with the one in post #4? I don't plan on pushing anywhere near that hp rating anytime soon. I'm more enticed by the "20% less pedal effort compared to a stock ford clutch" claim 86-01 MUSTANG VALEO FMS KING COBRA CLUTCH KIT 10.5" STAGE 2 KIT SUPPORTS 600HP | eBay

I could live with the stiff pedal though, your right it does remind me that I'm driving a real deal muscle car that requires some muscle lol

On my build,I’m trying to keep within stock specs, since It’s just gonna be a daily driver.

I would recommend a new pivot stud for your clutch fork,it will keep it from moving around too much.
