Considering looking at grabbing a fun off road toy this fall... I had a modded RZR back in 2008 or so for a short period of time but I know they have changed a lot since then. Should buying modded save a good bit of money? Is buying all stock a safer bet? Are they pretty reliable? Are the turbo models worth it? I would mostly do trail riding with it and wouldn't beat the shit out of it all the time but if its fast, that's always more fun. Just looking for some insight and experience. Thanks in advance

My buddy was all about these before buying his Raptor (Truck). According to him, the Yamaha was the one to get. That's all I know.

Those Yamahas are very nice. Guy had one at the dunes last season with a good sized turbo running about 20 psi... thing made 300+ to the tire and was a monster in the sand.

I haven't heard anything about the yamahas, ever... Weird. I would imagine they are a little more expensive..?

300whp in one of these things would be sick! Im seeing a couple of RZRs locally modded making around 150ish hp

The only ones I have driven/ridden in are mostly stock engine NA models so I probably don't even know what fast is..

If you can find a low mile XP 1000 with a decent amount of extras I would go with that. If you get a stock one and add a windshield, roof, lower doors, light bar, winch, harnesses, skid plate, and possibly a radio your going to have a couple grand in extras and that’s just what I would consider must haves.

I have a 1000 and my friend has a turbo and based off my experience, if your mainly going to use it for trail riding the 1000 is all you really need. If you were doing a lot of dune riding I would go turbo.

I really do like the idea of a radio but not some extravagant system. Something I can play music with and hear well is all. I also like the idea of room for at least a "small" cooler... Do most 2 seaters have that?

Enjoy responsibly!

All the assholes around here got a lot of trails shut down because they trashed the trails. The side by sides did a ton of damage to the trails due to their weight/power, but what really killed it was the beer cans everywhere.

Only a rookie beer drinker would carry a "small" cooler. Big cooler guys are trail trashing guys to look out for...

I cannot stand seeing people litter. I'm a huge advocate of throwing away your ****ing trash where it belongs. Why be lazy and irresponsible and ruin shit for everyone else?

I guess the definition of "big" and "small" coolers is relative LOL

RZRs are fast, have the 4x4 system and best ride but you will spend as much time wrenching as you do riding. They are cheaply built in mexico with chinese parts. They break easily and instead of fixing the problems they just roll up to the next model year. Seems to be working cause people still buy them every year. They have a huge following, its cult like.

The yamaha is the most reliable but it is a high rpm, manual shift sand dune machine. Not as good for crawling, slower trails and mud.

Cam am maverick X3 IMO is the best machine on the market. Fast as the rzr and less troublesome. Just my 2 cents...

I’ve been passively looking for s side by side for the wife. I haven’t been able To find any used ones near me for less than 10k. Most the ones i find are a 2016 or something, it seems like most people hold on to them.

I have a RZR 570. Fun to drive, but always wrenching on the stupid thing. I want to get rid of it but too cheap to get anything else right now. I'd go Can Am or Yamaha.

Which parts break a lot on the RZR?

A friend of mine has a Ranger (either his second or third) and he has told me that if you get stuck in mud and give it a lot of gas in reverse it can break the chain pretty quick. Trying to hammer your way out of thick mud can take out axles too. My friend has a wench on his and as soon as it feels stuck he lets off of it and pulls himself out.

Here is a rzr forum
https://www.rzrforums.net/forums.php

I follow rzrsedge on you tube, he has a lot of riding videos if you're interested in that.

If you don't mind a road trip these people have good prices. People in the Houston area don't deal on them.

Damn near all my friends have performance side by sides. Nobody likes the yamaha, EVERY SINGLE RZR is constant belt issues and to me the chassis quality looks suspicious (typical poolaris) and one friend has the Maverik X3 and that thing is the king shit, no question.

I agree with the rzr 900 or 1000. Plenty of power and good suspension. The suspension is the most important component for regular trail riding. You can feel the difference on every bump. The turbo machines are really made for the dunes.

They do have really high resale value. A nice used '13-14 will still bring in 12k or so. I haven't checked the prices on a new one but it might be worth getting one.

Good times.

Polaris are maintenance whores. Cheap parts, wheel bearings suck and axle breakers.

Yamaha yxz is geared and has a manual clutch. Pain in the ass on trails.

Can am are good. Less issues than Polaris. Still lots of wrenching time for maintenance and greasing if you want it to live.

i was going to get a RZR until i started spending time on the forum. From what i understand belts constantly break, voltage regulators, tie rods, differentials, cv joints, axles, bearings..etc. I could go on..

I dont have that kinda time so im either going with a honda pioneer 1000 or either version of the can am maverick.
