Afternoon, first post on here but I recently got a 96 cobra, came with shorty headers, CAI, and an exhaust system. Everything else is left alone. 120k freeway miles. I took it to the dyno the other day and got 284rwhp on my third run and everything is healthy. With that being said, I’d like to stay stock internals with 400-450 goals.
Anyone here boosted stock with no probs? What’s the best bang for my buck when it comes to turbocharge/supercharge. This will also be daily driven and I’ve read some threads on here about it but that was back in 09 and I’m sure things have changed.
Thanks in advance.

If you plan on staying with a stock bottom end, then just throw a Vortech kit w/intercooler on it.
If you plan on upping the boost/power, and building the lower end down the road, I say turbo.
I went turbo, but it's not done yet.

A simple Vortech with a decent tune should get you 400rwhp. If you go that route buy a tuner kit without injectors or a fuel pump. You can find better options then what they give you.

If you looking for 400rwhp in an easy, reliable daily driver, don't rule out a Coyote swap. They are getting cheaper all the time and even a stock motor gets you to your rwhp goal.

Thanks for the reply. Yeah I plan on leaving this car the way it is after putting on a kit. Then hopefully work on a 03/04 in the future. I’m getting a general consensus that vortech is the way to go so I’ll look into that. And putting together my own kit will be easier on the wallet right?

Thanks for the reply. Yea looks like I’m going with a vortech kit. I’m not necessarily on a budget but if I can save then I will. Do people sell used kits or parts on here? Not sure if that’s allowed

Look in "The Market" section for new/used parts for sale.

I bought my SCi trim vortech for my 98 for $1900 around 2008 ish.

If your going to run it in blow through then
Get a good slot style maf and you should be good.

I’d go with atleast 42lb injectors but if you can swing it get 60’s or 80’s. Always room to grow.

All said and done I put down 430 to the wheels on like 11 psi with my blow through setup. Driveability was awesome.

Not a daily driver, but it could be. Currently 465rwhp (Mustang dyno) on 11psi. Timing and AFR arekey. Too much and you get detonation and "poof" with stock internals.

I sourced everything for my set up individually. Found a great buy on a junk blower, but had a lot of parts like brackets, Paxton intercooler, etc... Go with th at least 60lb injectors and budget for a Quarterhorse and Binary Editor. It seems "tunes" are never quite right and learning how to tune can iron out a lot of drivability issues. Another reason to get the tuning parts is there are some great tuners who can work with you remote, and you can then load their tunes.

Biggest decision is to find a blower you like. Vortech is good and well supported. You will have to spin a VSi hard and will be about at the limit of it. Conversely, I had to slow mine way down.

Go visit the marketplace here, eBay, corral.net to start sourcing parts. I would buy a new SCT Big Air 5000 slot MAF. The one thing that can be frustrating is dealing with used MAFS. Get an intercooler. Don't be afraid to piece stuff together. There will be fabrication involved. If you can weld aluminum, great. Otherwise find someone that can. It will be fiddley to plumb the intercooler, BOV, etc... but patience is key.

In my opinion this is hard to do on your only car. I had mine down over a winter with my fantastic heated garage to work on it and sort everything out. There is no such thing as "a kit" in my opinion.

Very true. I was only saying “kit” because I’m starting from scratch and with this being my first build I’m hesitant on ordering parts just to find out that I needed a different part. Fabbing parts should not be an issue since I will be getting help. My biggest concern is just individually finding the parts and making sure everything will “connect” etc. like I said I’m not necessarily on a budget but if I can save by making my own “kit” then that’s what I’m doing.

That’s awesome. Is there much difference when it comes to specific parts needed (brackets etc) comparing 96 and 98? If not is it possible for you to send me your parts list? So I can use it as a guideline. Thank you for the reply

I haven't checked lately, but I got the complete installation manual for the 96-98 4.6L DOHC engine for the Vortech installed on my car by the previous owner(my son) on-line from Vortech, with a parts list of course.

It's a pdf file. I can e-mail it to you if you PM me your e-mail address.

Be aware that there is a small diameter high temperature rubber hose that is used to connect the right exhaust manifold to the air injection system that probably will have perished due to the high manifold temperature if it was previously used, or may not even be available with a used setup. You'd have to check with Vortech to see if it still available from them. Or check back with me or others here to source a suitable replacement.

Great that would be greatly appreciated. I’ll shoot you a PM right now. And alright I’ll keep that in mind

Hmmm, no PM yet. Maybe you didn't get around to it yet, or maybe you don't have PM privleges yet, or I haven't used the PM system in so long I can't find it!
Looks like I just attach the file right here and now. Then anyone can access it!

Yeah I was looking for the PM button for a good 15 minutes haha. I don’t think I have the option to do so just yet. But I see the attached file. I appreciate it

I've been running a S trim Vortech on my stock bottom end for 8 years without a issue. I'm at 430ish rwhp and average 19mpg's
