Let Me Get a Look in There | SVTP Tool-Tech | USB Borescope Camera
Ever wonder if you’ve had some detonation in your engine, and possibly some damage to the pistons? If you could buy yourself some peace-of-mind for $20 would you do it? Well I did. One late night after a few bourbons I was doing a little online shopping, which is always a good idea, and I ran across this super cheap bore-scope camera. While I didn’t have an immediate need for it the features, low price, and my lowered inhibitions all conspired to get it to my door with 2-Day Prime shipping.
The two biggest selling points for me were price, around $20, and the fact that it’s a USB device. It works in a manner very similar to an old-school web-cam. You just plug it into your computer’s USB port and use any video capturing software you may have to capture or view the images. The camera body is similar in size to a AAA battery and the attached cable is needlessly long. Best of all, there is a ring of USB-powered adjustable LED lights built into the camera body.
Since that first outing I’ve used this little camera many more times than I would have predicted. Just having the thing sitting around pretty much guarantees every time I have the spark plugs out of something that I’m going to be checking out the bore and pistons. I’m actually using it right now to determine the effectiveness of my favorite fuel system cleaner in my lawn mower. Not exactly the most exciting project, but it’s a handy bit of info to have. If you’re interested in buying the particular bore scope camera I have you can do so at the link below. However, I’m pretty sure the same exact camera is sold under various names by several sellers on Amazon. So feel free to shop around. This camera works well for me, but I’m sure there are other options out there. Check them out:
