Let Me Get a Look in There | SVTP Tool-Tech | USB Borescope Camera

Ever wonder if you’ve had some detonation in your engine, and possibly some damage to the pistons? If you could buy yourself some peace-of-mind for $20 would you do it? Well I did. One late night after a few bourbons I was doing a little online shopping, which is always a good idea, and I ran across this super cheap bore-scope camera. While I didn’t have an immediate need for it the features, low price, and my lowered inhibitions all conspired to get it to my door with 2-Day Prime shipping.

The two biggest selling points for me were price, around $20, and the fact that it’s a USB device. It works in a manner very similar to an old-school web-cam. You just plug it into your computer’s USB port and use any video capturing software you may have to capture or view the images. The camera body is similar in size to a AAA battery and the attached cable is needlessly long. Best of all, there is a ring of USB-powered adjustable LED lights built into the camera body.

While I bought the camera without a job in mind, it wasn’t too long before I had a task that would have been nearly impossible to complete without it. To make a long story short, it’s in the video below, I dropped a bolt in an impossible to see are of a 6.7L Powerstroke diesel’s valley. Without this camera and the included magnet attachment that bolt would have been lost forever. I would have never been able to blindly snag it with a magnet on a stick. However, I was able to retrieve the lost fastener and complete the job without calling up either Tasca and Tousley Ford and ordering a replacement.

Since that first outing I’ve used this little camera many more times than I would have predicted. Just having the thing sitting around pretty much guarantees every time I have the spark plugs out of something that I’m going to be checking out the bore and pistons. I’m actually using it right now to determine the effectiveness of my favorite fuel system cleaner in my lawn mower. Not exactly the most exciting project, but it’s a handy bit of info to have. Check out the video below for our full review:

If you’re interested in buying the particular bore scope camera I have you can do so at the link below. However, I’m pretty sure the same exact camera is sold under various names by several sellers on Amazon. So feel free to shop around. This camera works well for me, but I’m sure there are other options out there. Check them out:

These are an awesome tool to have. I recently purchased an HD one of these also from Amazon that is wireless such that it connects to your smart phone over wifi. The free software from the related app store(s) lets you grab stills or record video. The camera is even smaller and (not mentioned in the article) has adjustable LED lighting around the camera that you control on the other end of the cable so you can get a good look inside what you're investigating. I splurged the extra 4 bucks and got the one with the 30' cord. Yes, 30ft. Came in handy finding rocks in a pipe for my backyard pond as most of these are waterproof.

I have no connection to the company and don't know the policy on dropping a link to it on Amazon but these are great to have.

Pretty awsome. I like the Cobra shirt

We have 2 of those left, but I'm not sure which size. I have a handful of long sleeve ones we had printed for track days too.

Should bring one of these to any potential terminator purchase.

I've been thinking about buying a 12 year old dinghy on CL. You better believe I'm going to scope both cylinders and give it the poor man's compression test (thumb over the spark plug hole).

Now there's a really useful (and very inexpensive) tool for every automotive toolbox. Thanks for posting it!!

Like all these tools I've posted, I'm surprised how often I've used it.
